Seems like a no-brainer for me. Reserved 4 nights in a suite at the Park Hyatt Paris Vendome with Hyatt points. Spending last night at the airport as I didn't have enough points left.

The new plan is to redeem my 110,000 and my wife's 110,000 for four $900 certificates = $3,600. Five nights should cost $3,800 and I can use one of my Diamond Suite upgrades.

I get five nights at the Park Hyatt for, basically, nothing. I get my points back and earn more for the stay. Thanks, Capital One!

And you do earn points on this and get the bonus points from the Q2 promotion, correct?

That would be correct if the stay falls in the Q2 qualifying period!^

The only potential issue is being able to redeem the 'miles' (which need to be credited to the a/c first), & get the Hyatt cert delivered, before the prospective stay is to occur!

For the Hyatt ignorant what do you mean by "I get my points back"? Are you saying that your Hyatt stay generates an amount of Hyatt points equivalent to what you are spending from Cap1?

He had it reserved using Hyatt "points" and will now cancel that reservation (putting the points back in his account) and then pay for the stay.

Yes, Hyatt will credit points for a paid stay, which is what stevens397 has now booked, -- after canceling his points award stay, and will apply the Hyatt cert towards the paid stay!^ So, it's win-win all around!

Another possible issue, Cap1 only carrying a limited amount of these certs. My wife has already planned out how she's going to spend that money at the GH Kauai. I shouldn't have said anything until they were in hand....

From the T&Cs:
No credit or change will be given on unused portion of certificate unless required by law.
Where is it required by law that they give change? If we can find such a jurisdiction, there's be an opportunity to convert 51250 C1 points into $800 cash an a $100 hotel stay.

What exactly is your concern about the T&Cs? -- there's a lot of details there & I'm imagining that the GPC will be looking at exactly the same T&C's, & can't clarify unless you specify your concern!@:-)

The rules that you posted are just a reading comprehension test. We have the T&C and they look pretty self explanatory to me. Seriously, this looks like a $900 Hyatt check certificate. I'm not sure the GPC can help with reading comp other than to explain what each line means.

The cynic in all of us is wondering the same thing - why would Hyatt sell a $900 cert, through C1, for $520? So why don't we just think this through until someone redeems for one of these and reports their success?

Hyatt previously sold $100 certs through Costco for $80, from which Costco received a cut (maybe 10%, I don't know). So Hyatt received ~$70-$72 for that $100 cert, which was really two $50 certs and could be combined with as many as a user had to usually cover 95%-105% of a hotel bill. (I say 105% because one could use a $50 cert to cover a $48 hotel bill and still come out $8 ahead.) So Hyatt took about a 30% cut on those stays.

Now we can look at the C1 Hyatt certs and start with paying $520 for a $900 cert. That's a 42% discount. But C1 probably isn't taking a cut because they're buying the cert from Hyatt. So we likely can compare this 42% discount to the 30% discount through Costco. A $900 cert is more difficult to use than a $50 cert (put another way, a pile of $50 certs can act like a $900 cert, but the only way to make a $900 cert act like a $50 cert is to leave $850 on the table). This means two things - both of which are in Hyatt's favor and can help explain why they would offer this 42% discount. First, these stays will be more lucrative for Hyatt because most will probably have a hotel bill of at least $900. But $900 is a lot harder to hit on the nose than in any number evenly divisible by $50. This means many stays will greatly exceed $900 (people who can consume a $900 cert in one go are more likely to have a bill greater than $900 than is someone who usually sees bills more suited for the $50 certs). Second - and this is the other side of that argument - the $900 only costs the customer $520 (or maybe some people will see it as $260 because that's the amount of cash they would get for 52k C1 points). So using a $900 cert on a $700 (pick a number between $520 and $900) stay is attractive to some. In that case, the customer only gets a 26% discount, which is less than the 30% or so cut Hyatt took on the Costco certs.

We could play around with the numbers all day, but we have the T&C and they seem normal.

I'd agree that the concerns here are:

1) If it indeed is 1 x $900 cert of multiples of $100s etc.

2) What restrictions on rates that these can be applied to (eg AAA, AARP, Seniors, Govt, Corporate etc). Obviously prepaids can't use these certs.

1) The T&C say "The certificate is good for..." so my guess is this is one $900 cert.

2) The T&C say this is good for all "publicly listed and available room rates and packages." I believe in the past we have been told that this language means anything available on the Hyatt website. However, the Costco certs have more restrictive language, expressly stating that the certs are not applicable towards negotiated volume rates (and a hotel could argue that AAA is a negotiated volume rate).
