I'm glad Hyatt are building a nice resort in China. I believe Ningbo is near Shanghai, but is it going to have a proper beach?

Hi!

Yes Ningbo is near Shanghai but need to ride about 2 hours to find a rather clean beach. More info about Ningbo beaches and surroundings here: http://www.helloningbo.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=11

Concerning the new Hyatt resort, it is located on the banks of Dongqian Lake which is the biggest lake in Zhejiang (about 20km2). The water is rather clean and I guess that if they have these kind of resorts the authorities will be even more careful about the quality of water.
Dongqian Lake has also the largest and greenest golf around (Delson Golf) and a quite a few very residential areas. Dongqian Lake city is about 30 minutes ride from Ningbo city center.

Cheers!

Roger

Political factors (and money/land) played a significant role in this development.

I'm sure politics and money played majorly in why a "nice resort" is being built in Ningbo. I can even understand why Hyatt Corporation would want to be sell, er lend, its prestige. A Hyatt Regency maybe... but a Park Hyatt?!?

If you think about from the perspective of Hyatt's overall goals within the region, it makes sense. (The Ningbo officials had good 关系 in BJ and SH.)

Ningbo has quite a few success stories and famous bosses in Shanghai often have their roots in Ningbo.
The city is still in big development, the subway is being installed, and lots of others 5 star hotels opened recently (Sofitel, Shangri-La, Nanyuan Universe) and will open soon (The Westin and Park Hyatt).
Of course there is still a big gap between very rich people and ordinary workers but this gap is slowly reducing.
In Ningbo you can see quite a few Bentley, Rolls, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Benz and lots of BMW 7,60. There are no small BMW over here :-)
So I guess there is a good potential for Hyatt...

FYI, this project has been in the works for around 8 years (maybe longer; that's when I first got wind of it); it was originally supposed to be a Grand Hyatt.
