Sure, you can play the "dumb gaijin" card, but the fact that Japanese do everything by the book will tell you that they will follow everything listed in the rate description, 100% of the time.

They will ask you for ID and when you fail to present it, they will charge you the rack rate.
I typically stay on partner and customer rates in Japan at the typical int'l chains, including Hyatt. I can count on less than one hand the number of times I've been asked for ID. Is it worth the risk of paying rack rate to stay on a rate that you don't qualify for? Not in my opinion. Can it be done. Sure. But I agree that if you don't feel comfortable paying rack rate if you don't get away with it, just don't do it. |
Forget about the corporate rate: Use FFN!
Thinking a little out of the box: If you have time and are able, check into a few HPs for as low as about $50 a night between now and then: That will probably cost you less than the corporate rate on one night at the PH.
And then there's the 5K for 1K promo to top that.^ Of course, there may be other technicalities preventing the OP from doing this:rolleyes: |
The Advance Rates at the PHT are around 33.000 JPY - that's a real bargain for this terrific place. There is no free lunch and if you are looking for the best deal available, stay at the Century Hyatt. The renovated rooms are great and the prices are very low. You can still walk over to enjoy the New York Bar & Grill.

I know from experiences of my friends that both GH Tokyo and PH Tokyo will ask for your business card or company ID card. They will send you e-mail offers after you stay. They may ask you for "correct" company e-mail address on your second stay if they get e-mail failure. I do not know what will happen if you fail to show them your corporate ID. My friends do actually work for companies of which they use the coporate ID.

I agree that the Hyatt Regency is a very good option to consider if you are uncomfortable with the possibility of having to pay a rack rate at the PHT. It is not a luxury hotel like the PHT, but is a very good four star option with good service. For around the 33,000 JPY the OP could probably book a club room at HR Tokyo. I love the New York Grill and recommend it highly, but for fine dining at the HR Tokyo one does not need to look further than the Michel Troisgros french restaurant on the ground floor. It has two Michelin stars and the food and service are superb. |

and, has anyone here, a non ibm employee attempted to use their corporate code. have you been successful?
When I was checking out at the PH Seoul I overheard a discussion between a guest and the hotel staff. He was using Samsung's corp rate without being an employee (but a partner/vendor). He had to wait more than 30 minutes for his contacts within Samsung (who made the reservation in the first place) to send a fax that he is entitled using the code. Strange enough that Samsung negotiates rates with Hyatt since they run their own hotels...

do they actually send my name to ibm to confirm, or just ask for a biz card?

my experience
i had business cards at the ready, printed online for ten bucks, but no one ever asked me for id, other than my passport and i used several different corporate codes at hotels all over asia including the park hyatt saigon and the hyatt regency tokyo. my favorite part? after my two stays in vietnam, i'd earned a hyatt bonus of a free night which i took at the new andaz on wall street. it turned out to be one of the nicest hotels i've ever stayed in, a huge room with a bathtub big enough for a family of four, all the snacks i could eat, free wireless and the most comfy bed i've slept in, save my own.
i give a huge thumbs up to corporate codes and will continue to use them when i can. |
