Technically, there's only one 0* star hotel. (according to Wikipedia). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_(classification)

"There is only one record of a zero star rating to date. It is the Null Stern Hotel in Sevelen, Switzerland. It is a converted nuclear bunker. The Null Stern Hotel was the artistic brain child of Frank and Patrik Riklin, which was then turned into a business."

In the case of Golden Gate, I made the 0* rating up myself. Why? Someone expecting "Motel 6" 1* quality rooms might be disappointed.

sub-1* might be more accurate. No health issues I know of...but (1) the headboard of my bed fell off & had to be reattached (2) some of the electrical outlets didn't work (3) some lights didn't work (4) the window was completely boarded up.

Why did I book Gold Spike before? (1) Curiosity. (2) $1.54/day on weekends (using a coupon) (3) Convenient location for downtown casinos.
Las Vegas is renovations.

There was a 0* place I used to stay in Las Vegas many years ago - Ogden house - smelly flophouse, but it was $19/day & felt safer than the fleabag motels around town. After renovations last year, it's now a suite-only hotel - El Cortez's Cabana Suites. Quite nice - 3* I'd say. The rooms might be better than many 4* rooms (not quite 4.5 *).

I wouldn't necesssarily call the "New" Gold Spike a dive, at least the casino. The casino is completely rennovated. The copper corner of penny slots is gone. It's all ticket in ticket out.

When I was there in May, they were rennovating one of the floors in the hotel.

Check some of the latest Tripadvisor reports.

I am very curious on the status of the hotel renos

Check out El Cortez, downtown on Fremont, at Expedia.

Stay on the week nights. You will never get a better price on a 5* hotel than that. Wynn is a great place.

As long as you don't run into MLK holiday, you should be able to get great prices for that time. You are getting a deal with the Wynn offer, but you should check around other places. The Venetian has good prices and is comparable to Wynn. Also, try Bellagio and the Four seasons. If you can go down to 4*, you'll be amazed at the deals you'll find.
Enjoy.
