Transiting in HK with two different itineraries. Do I have to exit custom?

I will be traveling from Shanghai to Ho Chi Minh via Hong Kong. From Shanghai to Hong Kong, I purchased the ticket on China Eastern. From Hong Kong to Ho Chi Minh, I am flying United, using my Mileage Plus miles. So I have two separate itineraries.

I am not planning to check in any luggage. So, in HK, do I have to exit customs? Or can I use one of the transfer points inside the terminal to check in on my United flight?

Thanks!

You can use one of the transfer points.

If you were to check baggages, you can interline them no problem (both MU and KA will do it for you). Definitely no need to get out. HKG is one of the best airports in the world for transiting, infrastructure-wise.
