Hotel for leisure trip

I'm working on a leisure trip to several destinations in Asia in June. 2 years ago I stayed at the Royal Pacific in Kowloon. The stay was very nice but I'd like to try something new.

Do you have any suggestions for (I'll stay 2-3 nights):
- newly renovated rooms; beds should be rather hard than soft (no soft beds where you sink in)
- it'd be great if a gym is in walking distance. Public transport must be in walking distance (max. 500m)
- breakfast buffet with (large) non-smoking area to enjoy food and service
- rates should be about US$150 max
- getting points/miles would be an advantage (1.prio: Marriott/Starwood, 2.prio: Hilton, Shangri-La, Hyatt, 3.prio: other chains)

This site might help you:

Finding some hotels that match your requirement and then ask in their specific forums might give you better results. This forum's pretty dead.

The Sheraton Kowloon is very well located and has an excellent gym. There is also a 24-hour Fitness a couple of blocks away if you belong to a health club that is affiliated with them (I'm sure you can also buy a day pass there).

I am fortunate to live in a city with many Chinese-American travel agencies and I have found them to have the best room rates for HKG hotels. (Example: Hyatt Regency Kowloon for US$100, including taxes). If you can locate a Chinese travel agent in or near Ulm, you should contact them.

Be aware that some hotels will not give points if you are getting a low room rate.

If a gym is important, and reasonable price and close to everything like subway, ferry, and good food under $100.00 with Harbor view if desired, then the only choice is the modern hotel called the YMCA. Americans don't really understand the Y in other countries can be a real nice place to stay.

Look it up on www.asiatravel.com

I usually stay at Marriotts in an upgraded rooom, everywhere.

Before British rule ended, bookings were SO heavy, it was impossible to get a reservation at the Salisbury Y. It was full of savvy tourists and this board supported the idea to no end.

I'd like to suggest the Island Shangri-La. The hotel is absolutely stunning-- with many Austrian chandeliers and that huge tapestry. Tea in the library is a must, as well as dinner at Petrus.

>>- newly renovated rooms; beds should be rather hard than soft (no soft beds where you sink in)<<
The rooms are very nice. I found the bed to be quite comfortable-- I generally prefer a firm mattress.
>>- it'd be great if a gym is in walking distance. Public transport must be in walking distance (max. 500m)<<
The hotel has a very nice fitness center and great swimming pool. The ISL's location inside Pacific Place is ideal. It has access to the MTR without going outside, though does take at least ten minutes to get to from your room. Also, all of the mall's shops and restaurants are right there for you.
>>- breakfast buffet with (large) non-smoking area to enjoy food and service<<
Golden Circle members (free, sign up on the internet) receive complimentary breakfast buffet in Petrus on top floor with stunning harbor views. I don't recall smoking being an issue here. The buffet consisted of a nice variety of cold food. Hot food was available off a seperate menu.
>>- rates should be about US$150 max<<
I think my rate was $175 using the United Mileage Plus hotel certificate.
>>- getting points/miles would be an advantage (1.prio: Marriott/Starwood, 2.prio: Hilton, Shangri-La, Hyatt, 3.prio: other chains)<<
I don't remember receiving miles for my stay, though my Northwest WorldPerks number was in my Golden Circle profile.

I noticed the original poster hasn't chimed in in almost two months so we may be preaching to the wind, but I agree that the Island is a nice hotel -- my favorite, in fact. It should be noted that I now have a strong preference for HK-side properties, especially when doing business. It's hard to really do HK from Kowloon.

I'm still here and appreciate all your feedback. Thanks.

BTW, Tea in the library/Island Shangri-La sounds great. I love afternoon teas - especially after walking around (in a humid and hot climate).
