Hong Kong airport HKG departures
Hi all,
It has been a long time since I flew out of HKG. Has anyone flown out recently? We're flying at 11am on a weekday on an EVA flight to Taipei. Would be great to hear how long security/passport control for departures takes. Thanks to everyone for their advice! |
Assuming you have echannel, one hour before departure is comfortable.

I've found security queues to be very random lately.
Early december, it was so bad the queue was extending in the check-in terminal, well beyond the BP checking/face recognition gates. I had to ask for an escort, or I would have missed my flight. Got the good ol' "15 minute from curbside to lounge" in January. Feb & March was noticeably more packed, I'd say 30 minutes. Long enough to feel it anyway. TL;DR: If you want to be on the safe side, arrive 2h before take-off. 1h *may* work. |
And yet you are still accepted for in-town check-in at HK 90 minutes before departure. I wouldn't worry about getting to the airport 60-70 minutes before my flight. 120 mins seems a bit OTT unless you want some lounge time.

In my six before noon departures this year, I notice more pax going through security. There are also more noobs, so the unpacking takes a lot longer, and the processing is slower.
The 15 minutes from the curb to check in to the lounge are definitely gone. |

I've flown a few times so far in 2024 and overall, security lines have become a lot longer than pre-COVID. More often than not, they stretched all the way to the air-side entry gates although they kept moving steadily. I think taking 20 minutes to get this part done is reasonably optimistic. I generally arrive at the airport 90 minutes before departure now even with a mobile boarding pass just in case. I've done 60 minutes before and it was a bit of a dash to my 2xx-gate.

Are there any security lanes for premium cabin / status passengers?

Technically they have priority lanes for CX Diamond members and CX Business/First passengers.

IIRC, it is for F pax only.

Update on departure
Just went through. Was a 30 minute drive from the Grand Hyatt. 10 minutes for the first passport security check machine that was much shorter than waiting for the regular passport check by a human. Then security check took 5-10 minutes. Then the second passport check, again through a machine took 5 minutes. The in person line was quite long. All in, 25 minutes from arriving at the airport to getting to the lounge.
arrived at the airport around 930am on a Tuesday. Only carry on luggage. Those who were checking luggage looked like a vey long line. thanks to all who responded |
