So many great ideas I am extremely grateful for the feedback thanks people!

re the booking and getting tier point and the holiday idea, it’s a Club class companion voucher so probably the value at £1500 per head (£1500 plus 150,000 avios) of the flights might be hard to beat in a package via BA?

Having lived in HK for many years, I would say that for a first visit you might want to do 7 days, however 5 days should be enough to squeeze the most important stuff in.

HK has definitely lost quite a bit after the crackdown, though it may be less perceptible to tourists.

Also less perceptible to a tourist who hasn’t been before. i’ve been to most major cities in SEAsia but never HK 🙈

For me, I am a bit torn between suggesting a habourfront hotel on the Kowloon side (like the InterCon suggested upthread), or the Conrad on the Island side - I am partial to Conrad, as the view from the top floors is also spectacular.

In either case, enjoy! I am in the "extra day is better"-camp as well :)

One thing I found last time is that there is a bar in what used to be the old city prison - quite interesting place, and worth visiting (I hope it still exists) :)

Just to clarify on the Intercont suggestions; stayed a night there pre-covid too, specifically to get the absolute harbour front views, and the views were indeed fabulous, and the hotel & room generally were pretty good, and you could sometimes get a harbour view room for a pretty decent price. BUT, the hotel has been comprehensively remodeled/renovated and is now the Regent Hong Kong, with rooms starting at a lot more than they cost when it was the Intercont. FWIW, the rooms do look fabulous, but they are not in the OP's stated price range.

Here are some slightly out of the ordinary places that I visited when in Hong Kong.
1. The Hong Kong Monetary Authority Information Center on the 55/F of Two, IFC. I went there for the view, even though the exihibit of old money is somewhat interesting.
2. The museum of Coastal Defense.
3. The village of Tai O. I took a bus there from Ngau Ping, after visiting the Big Buddha.
And, the place I want to see that next time I am in Hong Kong: The Hong Kong of Palace Museum.

Museums. Hong Kong's not a place for great or even very good museums, at least by world standards. Worth visiting a couple if you're here for a few weeks, but not on a short visit.

That said, there're great views from the Museum of Art on the TST waterfront.

Grateful for any views on possible hotels for a 5 night BA holiday, probably in November. I'm not too fussed about quality of the room, but would appreciate advice on pros and cons for location, transport links and other points for a first-time visitor. Happy to do plenty of walking if the weather allows.

Hyatt Centric Victoria Harbour

Kowloon Shangri-la

Hyatt Regency TST

The Murray

Grand Hyatt

Hyatt Centric Victoria Harbour

Close to causeway bay, close to MTR station. Downside is there's not much to see or do around the hotel area.

MTR station across hotel entrance but it's still another 5min walk inside the TST station to get to the platform. TST will get you to central and other outskirts islands of HK very easily

More central TST compared to shangri-la and more conveneintly located within TST. Would personally prefer this location over shangri-la, although it's marginal

In central area of city but still a 5-10min (uphill/downhill) walk away from nearest MTR station, if you're looking for a hotel that has a lot of transport links then this is not it, closest transport is the tram which can take you around HK island

Honestly, none of these hotels you suggested are super inconvenient or super well connected by a large margin. For a first-time visitor, IMO staying on HK island is more convenient as there's more stuff to see and do on this side but an MTR ride from TST to central would also only set you back maybe 15-20min

Exhibition Centre Station is only 3-4 minutes walk (mostly air-conditioned) from the Grand Hyatt.

Hyatt VH is right in the heart of North point. Lots of local stuff to do, see, and eat.
It is not close to CWB at all.

It's quite a journey. I've only been there once.

This has changed arguably in the last couple years with the opening of M+ and the Palace Museum. That said, they're big enough that they can each take the better part of a whole day to explore fully so that would factor in to a short trip as well.

As noted above those who haven't been to HK for awhile should also note that there are changes to the MTR - the merging of the Ma On Shan line and West Rail Line to form the Tuen Ma line all the way from Tuen Mun to Ma On Shan with new stations in Kowloon in between and the opening of the East Rail Line extension from Hung Hom to Admiralty incorporating a new station at the Exhibition Centre. These have made getting around much easier - particularly the latter, which means it's only one change from HK Island to Sha Tin and points north now as opposed to three!

I've been to HK lots of times but all for short stays. If you like cinema as I do, cinefan at HK always has artsy film screenings on weekends!
I'm going to revisit it in a month. Can't wait for food, music, films, scenery and people there!
