HK 14-day mandatory quarantine extended until Dec 31, 2020

Bad news for anyone looking to visit Hong Kong in 2020. The Government of Hong Kong extended the legislation that requires persons arriving from foreign places to enter a 14-day compulsory quarantine to December 31, 2020.

While I do not blame them one bit for their decision, I was hoping to visit next February.... this plan is going to be in jeopardy.

Things can change. No need to worry now. Just don't make any solid plans yet.

Well, there's Christmas coming up at that time. The Government's not going to want people travelling over the holidays and bringing back God knows what.

Oh, then there's Chinese New Year a few weeks later.

After that, Easter.

As I've said before, the quarantine rules are there just as much if not more to deter Hong Kong people from heading out and then heading back.

And don't confuse the quarantine rules, which have just been extended, with the ban on non-residents, which remains in place "indefinitely."

But don't expect epidemiological reasoning to drive decision making. Otherwise, on what possible scientific grounds could the Government continue to quarantine travellers from Taiwan?

"In for a penny . . ."

The Government's already made its decision to save Cathay, no matter the cost. Remember there are many indirect ways to provide support, like those advance ticket purchases a few months ago. Next time perhaps they'll do a favourable fuel hedge with the airline.

Don't forget that since Hong Kong is no longer "special", CX might lose access to USA markets.

But there was not a peep in Trump's announcement, or anything else I've seen, about air traffic rights. Or shipping, for that matter (except for the tax agreement). Getting into that would of course raise nasty reciprocity considerations.

While this is OT, I can tell you this will not be the case for now. At least - HKSAR Government has not done anything to piss off elsewhere.

So far, the center of everything is Chinese Government. Hong Kong is just the pawn on the chesee board. Beside - Hong Kong is the one of the largest trading partners for the U.S. So the U.S. is not intended to destroy Hong Kong.

:-(. Sorry. I too had planned to visit HK this fall.

Just for fun, maybe we can speculate on when US citizens could enter HK again? After vaccine is widely in use?
