Note that "protesters" are increasingly targeting the MTR, causing very serious disruptions. Why is completely beyond me. Almost as if they are purposely trying to turn HK people against the protests.

Tempers flare during rush hour chaos, MTR staff struggle to restore services | The Standard
The same reason protestors would occupy major roads in the heart of Hong Kong - civil disobedience. Generally, these protests are occuring during peak rush hours (early morning - 7 to 9am).

In the back of my mind is the possibility that these "protestors" on the MTR aren't really aligned with the protest movement but are working to destroy public support for the movement.

There is a thread on Tripadvisor which has very up to date info from locals who seem very well informed, including the upcoming protest schedules.
Of course, you have to weed through [removed by moderator] but it's a great thread nonetheless.
I leave for HK in a couple days and plan to be there over the weekend. It's been super helpful to me and I don't feel worried at all.

At least something good seems to be coming out of this.

"New World First Bus Co Staff Union yesterday asked bus drivers to support train captains. It urged the bus drivers to stay in their positions today and drive at a safe speed, adding it would consider its next move."

You are very welcome and thanks again - you and your TA buddies have taken a great deal of stress away from me. So nice to hear about what's really going on from actual witnesses on the ground. Lots of scaremongering going on.

Just a caution that if you can't pass for Chinese, you might consider particularly steering clear of the protests. There are reports that photos of Westerners seen around the protests are being circulated on pro-Mainland media.
