Trusted jeweler for jade

Would anyone care to recommend a reputable place to shop for jade jewelry?

There are 3 chain stores that sell jade/jewelry = Chow Tai Fook, Chow Sang Sang & Lukfook, also plenty of independent shops look for the QTS sign (Quality Tourism Service), shops accredited by the Hong Kong Tourism Board.

Also there the well known Jade market between Yau Ma Tei & Jordan MTR station.

When shopping for jade, always keep in mind the distinction between jadeite and nephrite. (If you don't know the distinction, then maybe you're not quite ready to buy jade.) Also bear in mind that in Chinese culture, many types of stones that resemble jadeite and nephrite are also called "jade." This is especially a concern if shopping at someplace like Jade Street.

Basically, you are expected to know what you are buying.

Where are they located? I can't find a shop with that name on Google. Thank you.

The QTS website shows two addresses. The actual website (jade.com hk) doesn't seem to be working.

Curiously Google (well, DuckDuckGo actually) immediately threw up:

Jadeite has rounded edges, almost impossible to get a crisp edge, while nephrite will have crisp edges. Both are very hard (jadeite is harder) but easy to carve with modern diamond cutting tools. Old jadeite is valuable in part due to the thousands of hours that were spent to carve it using grit or sandstone. Takes a real expert to spot a modern copy imitating an old piece (and with 100x difference in value). Personally I prefer the cheaper nephrite from NZ (where there is no jadeite) which often has great beauty but not investment grade as jade has been in the past (not sure about future appreciation though).

Color, and the precise shade and the extent of coloration, largely determine price, along of course with weight and existence of defects. But there are ways of changing the color from not too valuable to more valuable, so you also need to know the extent if any to which the jade has been treated. If you don't know what you're doing -- and even sometimes if you -- there's huge trust involved.

Note that much and probably most nephrite sold in China these days comes not from traditional sources in Xinjiang but from overseas, primarlly Canada. The raw stone is importd then worked to Chinese style domestically.

I would not buy expensive jade in Hong Kong without some very knowledgeable help. I've done with once with an elderly Cantonese woman who was a friend of my mother-in-law. She knew her jade, knew the stores, and knew the people. All of that is important.

On the other hand, getting something that isn't expensive is easy to do at the jade market in Mong Kok. You'll have fun and can't get ripped off if you stick to a sensible (LOW) budget.

Buy a piece of jade or jadeite that you like, not for resale or investment. Several experts have told me they cannot tell real jade because technology has made it possible to color the stone from a cheap piece into a look alike expensive piece. I inherited some jade but will never buy an expensive piece and I love jewelry.

I'm wondering how many specialist jade shops there are in Sheung Wan (esepcially ones whose website has recently gone down)...

From the court list, the person's name appears to be " 黃根堅 WONG, KAN KIN DEREK ", but I'm unable quickly to come up with the name of the shop.
