SIM cards in Hong Kong
I'll need a SIM card in Hong Kong for a week, my flight lands late in the morning on a Sunday (in case it matters for availability). I don't necessarily have to get it at the airport if there are better deals to be had elsewhere.
Would anyone care to recommend something specific? Thanks! |
Your Mobile; card discounted to around $50 for 8Gb at LTE or 4G for 14days around Shum Shui Po. Cheaper if you buy in quantities.

But if this is your first time in HK and you're visiting for just a week, starting off in Sham Shui Po trying to save a few dollars on a SIM card is not a good use of your time. Better you look at the options available from each operator on their English websites, then drop into a 7-11 or such and just buy the one you want.

You can get basic 4-5GB within unlimited wifi for 7-8 days for HK$50 (about US$6.50). International calls/SMS tends to bump up the price.
Is US$6.50 too expensive? What kind of usage will you need? |
Have a look at klook.com who usually have decent deals. Simple to pick up at the airport - one less thing to worry about in town. Put it in the phone on the way in.

I can easily do that a couple of days before the trip, but their choices are an 8-day card with 3G speeds, or a 5-day card with 4G speeds and 1.5GB of data. Is the second card reloadable?
https://www.hk.chinamobile.com/en/co...ndividual.html I believe the card now comes with 3GB of preloaded credits. Alternative you can buy at 7-11 |
Picking up the 5 day card from Klook myself when I arrive but will of course, activate it the day after as I will be arriving in the evening and it would be a waste to turn it on just to take the Airport Express back to the hotel. :)

That card is from China Mobile and is rechargeable. Or you can just buy 2 to make your life easier as I think the refill price is not cheap.

Good info, thank you. Does the card wok in Macau, as well?

HKSARG proposes real-name registration of prepaid SIMs, not sure how visitors (when they're allowed back) will be handled https://www.scmp.com/news/hong-kong/...all-new-mobile
