This thread is about Hong Kong to Guilin, but even Shenzhen to Guilin can be a PITA if you need to change trains at Guangzhou South. Were it not possible to book HKG-KWL for 4500 BA points, I might be able to offer more love for the trains, but flying is a complete no brainer if you have points to spare.

I took the direct train (back in spring 2016). Just assumed that with HS rail service to Shenzen north, and a direct train taking <3 1/2 hrs at least once a day, it wouldn't be too bad.

Keep the audience in mind!

For those working in China or who've otherwise had their fill of Chinese life, the train probably seems unattractive.

But someone touring China? Of course they'll take the train for a journey this distance. Of course they will.

Even if they have to make a transfer at Guangzhou South.

That's very insightful. You should create a meme of that observation by pasting the text over a GIF of the silhouette of a man staring wistfully into a beautiful sunset. It would go viral on Facebook.
