MTR multi day passes
Other than the Airport Express passes that include three days of MTR and buses, are there any other options for multi-day MTR passes that include buses but that don't include AE?
I've not been able to locate any on the MTR website. We'll be in HK for four full days, at the Courtyard Sha Tin, which is convenient to the A41 bus, so our plan is to ride that between HKIA and the hotel, and then MTR (including buses) to get around as needed. |
Just to be clear, the 3-day pass includes only a very small number of buses run by the MTR. These are in remote areas and rather unlikely to be used by toruists. The pass does NOT cover the buses run by CityBus, KMB, New Lantao Bus or NWFB. Nor does it cover ferries or minibuses.
Some very specific itineraries can make it pay off, but in general you're better off just getting a normal Octopus and pay as you go. |

A41 is not covered by the MTR 3-day pass (nor is any other airport bus).

I guess it'd be nice to have a multi-day MTR pass (assuming it's discounted compared to discrete fares), plus some cash for bus fares as needed (and the Star ferry, the ding-ding trolleys, etc). |
I did a lot of math on the various pass options before we went earlier this year and there was either no savings or it was negligible when buying a pass. It is just easier to load cash on the Octopus. And we used public transit at least 6 times/day throughout the trip.

Also - it is not a multi-day pass, but an Airport Express Travel Pass with 3-day unlimited ride. |
If you're unfortunate enough to be 65 or over you can get a Senior Octopus card and pay just HK$2/ride on most public transport.

Yes, I am interested in the Star Ferry and the trams. It seems that the best bet will be to just have cash loaded onto the cards, and pay as we go.

The Elder card with a maximum HK$2 fare works on practically all public transport except the "A" series Airport Express buses, the Airport Express rail line, and MTR journeys to or from the Mainland border. Bus rides under HK$4 are half-price. There are a very few other exceptions, unlikely to affect the average tourist, which you can read about here:
http://www.hongkongextras.com/_senior_visitor_discounts.html Outlying Island ferries offer the best deal with these cards, especially on weekends when a surcharge applies to non-senior passengers. |
I hate to bump this thread, but you guys got any suggestions on how to save money on taking the subway? The last couple of times that I was in HK, I used the subway a lot, but I find that I burn money really fast. Like one of the member here, I can easily take the subway 6-10 times a day. It's been a few years since I've been back to HK, so is there a weekly pass that allows me to take unlimited subway rides? I always take the Airport Express to and from the airport as I had a horrible experience with the bus the first time I went to HK when I was a kid. Any advice would be great.
