How does double dip work?
I am a new user of Amex Hhonor card. I am confused by how the double dip works. I searched through the forum but could not find the answer. I wonder if anyone can give me a quick hint here.
My question is - does double-dip means 1) the three earning style (points+miles or points+points) or 2) the three eaning style + Amex CC points? For example: I stay in a Hilton and pay $100 for one night using my Amex HHonor card, and I choose the following point earning style. How many points will I get totally for this stay? • Earn 10 HHonors Base points + 5 bonus points per eligible U.S. dollar spent This is my calculation: 10 HHonors Base points per $ spent: 10*100=1000 points 5 bonus points per $ spent : 5*100=500 points Amex HHonor card points: 5*100=500 points Therefore, the total will be 1000+500+500=2000 points Is this correct? Besides, if the room rate is not full rate, I only get points from the Amex HHonor credit card but not from the HHonor program itself. Is this right? Is parking not eligible spending to earn HHonor program points? Thank you very much for your response. |
"double dip" refers to getting points and airmiles on the same stay -
In your calculation you can get either the 500 "bonus points" or airline miles. Also, just to get you started out right... Don't forget the.------ "AMEX CO BRAND ONLINE BOOKING BONUS" - Book your hotel at hhonors.com, using your amex, and pay with the same amex, and get another 500 points... Also, when you get to "Gold" or "Diamond" status, you'll get another 25 or 50% of your BASE points added on top... I can break out a recent $103 hampton inn stay to show you... 1035 base points 250 myway preferences points ( instead of water or chips) 517 diamond vip points 500 online booking bonus points and possibly Another 500 double-dip points, or in my case 1/2 a southwest airlines credit... 2302 points AND 1/2 credit on Southwest total for me... You could actually get 2802 points if you gave up the airline credit. Parking could go either way, but most times it's counted towards points for me. And at the end of the month you'll get another bonus for spending on the AMEX.. in this case 500 more points... The only time you have to worry about room rate is if it's a "convention rate" - you still get points if you use AAA or AARP discounts... FYI: if you just got the AMEX read the fine print - it's not very well publicized, but if you stay at Hilton properties 4 times in the first 90 days of having the card they bump you to Gold status.... $20k in spending in the first year will also get you gold... |
Thank you very much for your reply and all of the details.
In your example, you ‘did not’ include the points you earned from using Amex HHonor credit card which is 5 points per dollar spent. Is that right? Besides, booking Hilton through hotwire, priceline, hotel.com, cheapticket, expedia, orbitz and similar websites will not get me any point from the HHonor program, is this correct? I think I saw this at somewhere but just want to double check. Thanks again! :) |

Thanks again! :) Max points could be 3302 in my example, for a diamond member using all the tricks ( that I know of:))... with the spending bonus... BTW, the spending bonus won't show up on your hotel bill, it'll be on your monthly statement from hhonors... there are other promos from time to time - , and my example was a Hampton inn - at an embassy suites your "myway" bonus could be 750 points instead of 250.. Any site that does not tell you which hotel you're getting before you pay is not going to get you points. - Also, in my example, you'ld lose the online booking bonus... Welcome to hhonors, btw.. ^ |
You forgot the 500 points for booking with Hilton and the AMEX HHonors card.
Of course, if you choose not to double dip, but to earn more HHonors points, you would also earn another 500 points based on the 50% of base. If you purchase the room through opaque sources (PriceLine, etc.) you will only receive the AMEX points through American Express. Parking, and all other spending that is hotel related (hotel restaurants, laundry, etc.) are all eligible for earning points; unrelated business spends are not - e.g. a remise taxi in Buenos Aires charged to the room, non-hotel restaurants or business (like gift shops) on hotel premises are not either.

Thank you very much for reply. :)
I found an online promotion 10% off Expires Dec. 31, 2008. http://www.hilton.com/en/hi/promotio...ateID=00020243 I booked a room through this special program 'USA swimming'. I am not sure if this program is owned by Hilton. Do I get the online booking bonus 500 points? Thanks, |
excellent question - I would contact Hilton and ask.
When I first clicked on the site i assumed it was a HILTON site - but the blurb and explanation made it sound like it was a 3rd party travel site. I would ask....
