King Bed......no, not really

I recently stayed at the Hilton in Auckland. I had requested a King bed and upon check-in I was told my room would have a King bed. It was not until I went to go to sleep that I found out my King bed was actually two single beds pushed together and covered with a sheet. There was no padding between the two mattresses. I prefer to sleep in the middle of the bed as I roll around. This made for a quite uncomfortable nights sleep...actually I hardly got any sleep at all. Has anyone else ever been stuck on this situation (without being notified of such....like on a cruise ship)?

Never happened to me, but did you inquire with management while you were at the hotel and what was their response?

It's very typical in Europe.

I've been at the Auckland Hilton twice in the past month, and had a proper king bed.

Its very very common in Europe but most of the time a thin pad covers the joining area seam but it is really not very seamless.

I did not enquire with the management because I became aware of the problem at 1am and was scheduled to wake up at 5am. I figured complaining would have taken too long. In the morning I didn't have time to stop by the front desk but I did send a message to the diamond desk and I am awaiting a reply. I'm fine with the concept of creating false king size beds but you should always at a minimum alert the guest. The weird part is due to the room setup (headboard and night stand) it appears it was a permenent setup!!

yes, i had a similar event at the auckland hilton. we wanted two beds and were told that was what our room was. when we walked into the room it was a "king." i called down to the front desk to get moved and they told me they would send someone up to "convert" the bed. thought it was kinda strange for an upscale hotel to not have dedicated king and two-bedded rooms. other than that this, the only hllton in nz, is first class.

Yeah, other than the bed I really liked this Hilton. It was nicer than I thought it would be. I also stayed at the new Westin which is VERY nice too!

We have always requested a King at Hilton Auckland - not sure if we got the King or the "king," but slept OK. This is, however, quite common on cruise ships, where they convert two twins into what is basically a Queen. Whether this is a problem or not is very individual - apparently.
