Does Hilton limit bandwidth?
Just wondering if anyone knows if Hilton does any type of QoS/bandwidth limiting? I'm on a long term stay at a HGI and they upgraded the network a month or so ago. Prior to the change it was just an open access point with no authentication, wireless coverage was spotty (so much so I started using my own wireless router) but during non-peak hours I could get >100kB/s on downloads. After the upgrade the wireless coverage is much better (yeah!), authentication is required (doesn't bother me) but try as I might (and believe me I try) I can't get more than 30kB/s even during off hours. Technically speaking I know it's very easy to limit the throughput per MAC address but I wasn't aware that Hilton was actually doing this.
Did the required search before posting, only related thread I found was h which doesn't specify the hotel chain. |
Not a hilton policy as such. Hotels typically deal with local providers for access and simply stick a bunch of access points bought from Frys - so open AP with no auth, or sign contracts with hotel broadband providers like Wayport and get QoS, bandwidth limiting, authentication etc.

tech support
Sometimes the bandwidth limits my ability to effectively login to work.
So I call tech support, explain the problem, and they increase the bandwidth to my room. Takes a while on hold and then maybe an hour or two before they get it done, but probably worth it for a long stay (or, as in my case, a need for access to a lot of data). |
Here's my favorite Hilton Internet story. Hilton Buenos Aires provides you with 5 options. 256K service is $21 USD a day up to 3MB service which is $120 USD a day! How's that for expensive???
