Thanks for the information! I was able to get the CSR to extend my FNA certificate and rebooked for GW for October. But I will discuss it with my wife and see what she thinks.
I don't know if anyone else just experienced this, but my CSR told me that even though it was an award stay, I was required to put down an ~$750 deposit for my two nights! Fully refundable of course if I cancel as well as show up I guess. CSR even checked with her help desk to find out what was up and said that it was a new policy by certain hotels, especially resorts.

FWIW when I booked NYE with FN certs, I was told it required $4,000 in deposit for the 2 nights (yeah...). Diamond desk called hotel, who said it's a new system issue and they don't charge said deposit on points.
Diamond desk extended my cert for a few weeks with no problem.

I don't want to make it a habit of commenting on occupancy rates, but so far COVID-19 has only helped GW. There are no cases in Maui county (yet), and Companies/Groups are looking at GW as a safer meeting spot than overseas. I don't think any President's Award Trip winners will complain about not going to Italy versus GW!

Just a data point - had a 2 night stay at the GW (1 night booked on points under my account as a HH Gold, 1 night booked on certificate on my partner's account as a HH Diamond). Both nights booked a terrace rooms only and we weren't expecting upgrades based on what we have read here.
Arrived at the hotel at 3pm and the check-in desk tried to up-sell us to the Napua Tower for US$200 per night extra being a Gold/Diamond (as opposed to the normal $250). We declined as we are not convinced it was worth the value - she then told us the room is not ready and gave us the keys to the Hospitality Suite to freshen up and said they would call when room is ready. We returned back to the front desk around 20 minutes later to a different agent to return the keys, and to our surprise she said our room has been ready (despite no calls), and we were actually assigned a room at the Napua Tower on the top floor. I had a feeling that they were going to put us at the Napua Tower regardless anyway due to how full the hotel was, but I find the attempt to up-sell a bit cheeky. Regardless no complaints with the generous upgrade and we have enjoyed the offerings at the Napua Tower. It was a short stay but a great one - and hopefully we will get to return another time!

Upgrades for Diamonds
Here now and told by the rooms manager that as of 2020, they no longer provide complimentary upgrades for Diamonds to a Napua club room. Regardless of availability.
They offered an upgrade for $175 per night.

And yet the reports of Napua upgrades persist. Bottom line: don't expect an upgrade, but if there are no other rooms available, the hotel might assign a Napua room in a pinch.

I am not able to pull up rates and availability for any of the the nights of December 24 through 31. It says sold out for every one of those nights.
I even tried using the Flexible Dates feature, plugging in a seven night stay, so it is not because of a minimum length of stay requirement.
I wonder why I am having that issue?
