Base versus Bonus points?
HH literature consistently differentiates between bonus and base points. Is there any practical difference between these and what they can be used for? In airline FF programmes there is certainly a difference.
|
HH elite levels are based on stays and/or nights, and not related to points earned. So it makes no difference to HH whether a point is a base point or a bonus point. They both spend the same.
Airline elite levels are based on flights and miles, with bonus miles for the most part not counting toward elite level. So there is a difference in base vs. bonus when it comes to earning elite status on airlines. Therefore the "flavor" of miles earned on an airline makes a difference, but the flavor of points earned from HH makes no difference. |

What is the difference between Base points and Bonus points?
Since it seems that only base points works for some "Important" stuffs, such as climbing the tiers and some rewards.
And what could be found on HHonors page, Hilton HHonors Reward Category, such as category 5 = 35,000 points per night, also should be bonus points. How useful the bonus points could be? |
Hi,
The base points ( 10 per $ spent) is used for one way of acheiving status (100k points for Diamond, 60k for Gold in a 12 month period). Your tier bonus ( 50% for diamond) is calcuated on your base points. These are added to give you your total points. The total poinys is then used for rewards ie 35k per night. The bonus points help you to achieve your reward level faster ( but not status) Regards TBS |
So, bonus points are indeed, very useful!
|
The Conrad Centennial Singapore is listed as 35,000 points per night, and "Six free nights for two at a Hilton Hawaiian resort" is required 175,000 points, so that means 5 nights there is enough?
I don't think so... confused... |
maybe I know where I was wrong, the "Hilton HHonors Reward Category" is for rewards, such as how many points you need to get one free night, not for earning points.
Thanks a lot! |
Base Points are VERY OFTEN 10 point per dollar, except for the RARE promo.
Bonus Points just are usuable for rewards. For example, I joined hhonors in October 2005, so inside my 12 month rolling period, I have received 164606 points via 10 points per $, the rest of my points in my current point balance are from bonus points, mianly tier bonuses, triple points promo, and now the double points promo(minus the 30,000 cat 4 cert from last night). Current Point Balance: 348,995 Qualifying Base Points Earned: 164706 |

Points, etc. Your link to HH Terms and Conditions.
er, kcnwa, I can't think of one instance where anyone gets ONE base point per dollar spent, ulness you signed up for a "special" promo. ;)
Base Points are redeemable points based on the room rates (before taxes) and eligible charges to the hotel folio during a qualified stay, but they also are counted for awarding status: 60,000 base points in 12 consecutive months, Gold; and 100k bp for Diamond. Members may only accrue 100k per stay... Bonus and all other awarded points are also redeemable, but do not count for status. ALL points are redeemable at rates established by Hilton properties based on their award category, or by Hilotn when other premiums are sought. It is all available in detail in the HHonors Terms and Conditions for 2006. I strongly recommend a thorough read (and download) of these by every member, annually. |
Doh. Yes, 10, not 1, I see the 10 in my head, just didn't get it to my fingers.

Points is points, unless you plan on using points to qualify for status (i.e. Gold, Diamond), and then you need BASE points (10 points per dollar spent on room, internet, room service, movies, etc, but NOT tax). |
