Elevator plummets @ Hilton Santo Domingo

Elevator plummets

Thirteen people were injured yesterday after an elevator plummeted from the seventh floor of the Hilton Hotel, at the Malecon Center in Santo Domingo. The incident occurred at 8:30pm during a re-election event for President Leonel Fernandez. Hoy writes that Fernandez was present at the event and reports that the people who were injured included ten police officers, two members of the Military Helpers Corps and one civilian. The injured officers were taken to the Police Hospital on Independencia Avenue. Police Chief Rafael Guzman visited the injured at the hospital, as did family members. No details have been given about any possible reason for the accident.

Trece heridos al caerse ascensor
ELVIS LIMA
[email protected]

TRIP REPORT: Hilton Santo Domingo, DR

Hello!

Well, I just completed a trip to Santo Domingo and since I stayed at the Hilton here (I am at the airport) I thought I would give a run down on my experience. I had been planning a trip to either San Juan, Mexico or Santo Domingo for a few days debating the costs of each. I decided to use my points for the hotel - which ever one I picked. The first inquiry showed normal rooms at normal point rates. The next day when I went to book suddenly there were Point Strecher Awards available! WOW! I have only seen these once before, so I thought fate was showing me the way.

Upon arrival in SDQ I hopped a Taxi to the Hotel (No Shuttle Service). The reception desk was small and next to it was another desk for HHonors and Executive Level guests, so I sat down. It took the clerk several minutes to check me in. He never spoke to me, no conversation, no nothing. He left twice to check with someone about something and finally returned with my room key. I noticed on the registration paper were two paper tear off cards for in-hotel charges. He told me room number and handed it all over to me. Later I noticed the cards for charging were not there (never got an explanation on that)

Now, I am Diamond (which I am starting to realize means nothing anywhere I go) and my profile says HIGH FLOOR in it. I see that I am on the 8th floor and think cool. Well, surprise. The rooms actually begin on the 8th floor out of 21. I guess this means no upgrade. Inside the elevator was an a staff member from the executive lounge so I asked if being Diamond gave me access - she said no. Disappoint sets in.

I get into my room and it is a standard room, by my definition. I connect to internet and go online to see the rules again, because I feel, as Diamond I should get something. I check the rules and there is a distinction: North America and Outside North America. So it begs the question: is the Carbie part of North America or outside it?? Getting onto Skype I call and find out it is outside North America. While I was on the phone I tried to book the executive room online which showed available for the same 3 nights I was there.

After 37 minutes on the phone with Hilton who had to call back the hotel twice because she said the 1st time the hotel person gave her seriously incorrect information. She waited until someone who knew the program got on the phone. The hotel admitted that they have executive rooms available but that I was "upgraded" to a corner room and that supposedly my room (on the 8th floor) has a better view than a room on the 17-21st floors... HUH? Anyway, she got me access to the Exec. Lounge. She said the manager would call back to explain but he never did.

Later I went to the front desk to get a new key issued to work for the Exec. Lounge. I used the lounge daily. It is average in size, great views of the ocean and I am not sure why, but it was usually deserted. Only 30 minutes of free internet per day. Alcohol was not free. The snacks were usually cheese, ham, veggies, nuts, and pastries. Breakfast was ok - precooked eggs and bacon. The toaster did not work for my 3 mornings there but that was ok.

An interesting aspect of the hotel: there is a 10% service charge (or TIP) on everything that all the workers shares. So be prepared. It was even levied on my internet connection in my room. I still fail to see how someone could be tipped on that. I have long believed that when people know that they do not have to earn a tip because it is included, the level of service provided will not be the same as those who must earn tips. Here is case in point. The staff were pleasant and friendly but there was no going above or beyond; no offering of advice, help, or information; they rarely started conversations; and there was no sense of urgency in anything that they did.

The room was great - and it did have a nice view. The layout was not the greatest, but I guess that was because it was a corner room. Nevertheless I was very satisfied with the bed, bedding and pillows (in fact I think they were the best pillows I have had in a long time.) I was a bit perturbed that they often ignored the DO NOT DISTURB sign and came around several times a day to check on the room. Finally, housekeeping did a great job daily with the exception of giving me more soap. I even called for it but it never came. Never fear, raiding the maid's cart is not new to me and I was able to lather up!

Some odds and ends: One of the dining establishments was being remodeled and closed. The room service prices were on scale with European Hotels (especially when delivery fee and 26% taxes factored in). The hotel is about 10-15 min from the colonial zone, so a Taxi is needed unless you want a really long walk (I did it once). If the hotel gets a taxi for you, you will pay double than getting the service number and call yourself. The pool was great, on the 7th floor, great ocean view, only 1 or 2 people there other than me. Watch out for the prices at the bar there, though! There is a new mall next door called Malecon but it is about 80% empty, so little there.

Overall, it was good. I just think as a Diamond there should be an attempt to strive for superior service. Would I return to this location again? Yes, with conditions: the price would have to be reasonable. The prices during my stay were $189/nt King or $199/nt King Exec (note the $10 difference and still not upgraded) + 26% Tax. I would even think twice about using points (at full price versus stretcher).

Peace!

I have always had excellent service at the SDQ Hilton. All staff from doormen to front desk, lounge and restaurant are extremely professional and always shined and polished. The training and QA managers at this location are clearly on the ball.

I have been upgraded to an exec floor every visit except one over the past four years (approx 8 stays). The lounge is nice, although beverages are no longer free as they were on my first stays but this is the same at other Caribbean Hiltons (except CUR!). I have received an in-room treat on every stay, usually some cookies or chocolates. You will also have the option of taking breakfast in the lounge or in the restaurant. No need to pre-arrange or have coupons. Just show up. The breakfast in the restaurant is excellent.

Shucks, I was really hoping for free drinks haha. Certainly glad to hear that they will be providing decent breakfast options though. Sounds like it will be a pleasant stay despite the lack of drinks.

Any must see recommendations for Santo Domingo itself and/or surrounding areas such as Boca Chica or Juan Dolio.

We stayed at the Hilton SDQ and the Embassy Suites Juan Dolio between Christmas and New Years last year to burn up some points on a last minute trip. Hilton is very nice, great staff. It wasn't very busy during that time. We booked a private tour of the local sites with the concierge and shared the trip with another couple. If you like baseball take in a local game. Baseball in the Dominican Republic is played with passion! (like MLB games used to be). There are also some great restaurants in the old part of town. The Embassy at Juan Dolio is OK. If you turn off the AC the room gets very musty. I don't understand why they carpeted the hotel in that climate. There were mostly Dominican families staying there and some airlines use the hotel for overnighting the crew. We used their shuttle to go to and from the beach and ate lunch at one of the all-inclusives on the beach.

HoKo, how was the trip?

I'm looking for someplace warm with a beach to go in March or April. Can't get the girlfriend on-board with a cruise, and the rates at the Hilton Santo Domingo don't look too bad.

If you want a nice beach then the Hilton Santo Domingo is not for you. Keep in mind that it is in the middle of a very populated city and too far from the area where ships dock (you wouldn't be right on top of it but will see cargo ships coming and going). I have not stayed there but am pretty familiar with the whole island as I lived there about 8 years ago. But the picture on the main page of the web site is a little misleading since it doesn't give a sense of the hustle and bustle of the city all around.

Thanks a lot Notenut. I appreciate you sharing your personal experience and knowledge of the city: it's going to help me make a much better decision.

I'm now leaning toward the Hilton Cancun or Clearwater Beach, FL.

Haha I wish I had done a bit more research before booking this trip.

I was still able to have a lot of fun but I probably would not go back.

There are some important things to keep in mind:

Santo Domingo doesn't really have a beach to speak of. There is a very small beach and the Hilton is right along it but the beach is covered in trash, very rocky, and frequently has homeless people doing their laundry in the ocean during the morning hours.

Now with that being said the view of the ocean from the rooms, and the Executive Lounge in particular, is gorgeous but don't expect to be able to lounge on the beach. The nearest beach town is Boca Chica which is about a 30 minute drive away and is literally overrun with vendors. I've been to Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia etc. and these were the most persistent and aggressive vendors that I've ever witnessed so that was a little off-putting.

Also the area that most tourists spend a lot of their time in is the Zona Colonial which is about a 5-10 minute cab ride from the Hilton so it got annoying having to pay the cab fares everytime we wanted to head over there. My hotel recommended the "Touristic Taxis" conveniently located right outside the hotel. Supposedly they are safer and more professional than taxis you can hail on the street. I took one for my first ride and paid 10US - every taxi after that I hailed cabs off the street and averaged about 4-6 USD depending on how much I felt like negotiating and never felt unsafe or threatened.

Hilton staff was nice for the most part - I got to know a lot of them fairly well as the Hilton is apparently a business hotel so it was pretty empty when I was there over the winter holidays.

EL doesn't serve free alcoholic beverages but had decent food and drink otherwise.

So yeah, overall the trip/hotel wasn't horrible by any means but it certainly wasn't a huge success.

Feel free to ask me more specific questions.

Here is a stay report from 9/1-9/3:

Location: The hotel is located on the Avenue George Washington, also known as the Malceon (boardwalk) about two miles from the most well known part of the D.R. the Zona Colonial. It's also close to the University and the Santo Domingo Metro, however, the Metro does not take you downtown. The area seems safe and there are a couple of casinos nearby as well as some restaurants.

Hotel: The building is quite impressive, a 21 story high rise with a large lobby, scenic elevators overlooking the open-air central core, numerous restaurants both on the 5th floor and in the lobby and a decent sized pool outside on the 6th floor. The lighting is good, the waits for the elevator were never long and the place felt new and/or renovated.

Check-in: I was greeted right away and was told as an HHonors Gold I would receive free internet (hooray!) and had been moved to an Executive King on the 20th floor, the same floor as the Executive Lounge. I also had an oceanfront view which I believe is also more expensive. The agent on duty was very helpful, as were all the agents I dealt with, and they were able to switch flawlessly between Spanish and English.

Room: The room was a very impressive one with a great view of the water, a large king sized bed, two chairs with table a desk with swivel chair and an excellent bathroom with a bath/shower with a rain head. The TV was a newer model with an impressive amount of channels including numerous ones in English.

Lounge: As I said, the lounge was on the same floor as mine (the 20th) and it's large with chairs and tables overlooking the water. There are also two very slow computers, a giant fish tank, bathrooms and helpful staff that frequently refill the food trays. Hours are:

Monday-Friday: 6 AM to 11 PM
Saturday: 6 AM to 10 AM, 5 PM to 9 PM
Sunday: 6 AM to 10 AM, 5 PM to 11 PM

Food in the morning included breads, cereal, yogurt, fruit, cold cuts and hot options (pancakes, scrambled eggs, potatoes, sausage, ham and bacon). For lunch: sandwiches, cold cuts, bread and fruit and for dinner, hot options (mini-pizzas and quseadillas one night, spare ribs and wings the other) as well as the fruit, cold cuts, bread and sandwiches. The lounge was extremely impressive. No booze though, just juice, water and soda.

Check-Out/Other: This is where I had issues. I had originally booked the hotel a month ago, then noticed the rate dropped. I cancelled my first reservation and made a new one at the lower rate. The hotel charged me the higher rate. It took a phone call to Hilton (they were very unhelpful), then two phone calls to the hotel (I was transffered about four times) and finally emails to get this rectified. All the way they kept saying "we still hope you consider us to be a "10"". I know it was mainly my fault for not verifying the correct rate, but I was still frustrated.

My rate ended up being $168 with tax (26%) for two days. I had a good stay and I would stay here again, though it is far from the main tourist areas. Pictures are in my Trip Report if you're interested:

Thumbs down Hilton Santo Domingo Review

"If you like small claustrophobic rooms, terrible service and a hotel far away from the tourist area, then enjoy this property!

This is my review of the Hilton Santo Domingo for my stay on January 18-20, 2013
Hilton Santo Domingo
George Washington Avenue, #500
Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic 10104

I am a Hilton Diamond member and I booked my reservation online at Hilton.com two weeks prior to my arrival. I reserved "1 King Exec. Floor Oceanview" under the "ANY WEEKEND ANYWHERE" rate of $84.15 (with taxes it came to $107.71 per night).

Rate per night: 84.15 USD
Total for Stay per Room:
Rate 168.30 USD
Taxes 47.12 USD
Total 215.42 USD
Total for Stay: 215.42 USD

Part of being a Diamond member, I am eligible for a "Space available Room Upgrade"

CHECKING IN NO UPGRADE
The check-in for elite members is a bit different than other properties, you go to a side desk where you sit down (like you're at a principals office) and they check you in. Staff that check in elite members are called "Journey Managers". So my Journey Manager, Oscar, checked me in. He told me I had been 'upgraded' to the Executive Floor Oceanview. I told him that is what I booked. He insisted it was an upgrade. I asked if he had any Corner Rooms or Junior Suites (I had checked availability before I arrived at the hotel and the website showed they were both available). He told me no. The hotel was pretty empty (I was the only one checking in and the lobby was empty).

OVERCHARGED
My room was already pre-paid (the hotel had authorized and then charged my credit card several days before my arrival for $219.43. Then they also took another charge of $218.61. Oscar wanted to run my card for the room and incidentals, I told him no, you already had over $400 authorized, which should be more than enough for a two night $85/night stay. He wanted to authorize another $250.00 for two nights (their calculation is they want to take three times the rate per night of the entire stay). I thought this was odd. I told him I would only allow him to take $125 more for 'incidentals' and no more. So now they have over $560 of charges and authorizations on my credit card for a two night $85/night stay.

SMALL ROOM
I head to my room. When I get there I am shocked - Its a small "oceanfront" room with one small window. Its very claustrophobic in this room. I call downstairs and ask to speak with a manager, I explain to each person that I wanted a different room, that the room was too claustrophobic; I am transferred and bumped around before finally being told a manager will call me back shortly to fix my situation.

TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE
Fifteen minutes go by, then thirty minutes and still no call back, so I call once again, I speak with again a variety of people, all who explain nothing and say the manager or anyone else is not available to assist me.
Getting nowhere, I ask to be transferred to the Hilton Honors desk, they tell me I would have to call it directly from my room and he gives me a local number for it. Whats funny is he gives me the local number and then after reading the number and confirming it with me, tells me that perhaps I would prefer the Diamond Hilton Honors help desk instead (he should of offered this in the first place). I take the number, call and speak with Veronica at the Diamond Help Desk. I explain my situation, she takes all my details and says that she will call the hotel and see what she can do without making any commitments; I'm placed on hold for about twelve minutes before getting disconnected.

Wonderful, there's another twelve min of my vacation gone. So I waited another fifteen minutes for her to call me back (she had my room number and personal details) or a manager or someone, still nothing. So I head downstairs, at this point I'm ready to go to another property (there are two Marriott properties nearby I can go to). I spent already an hour and half and haven't enjoyed Santo Domingo yet! I speak with Oscar again downstairs; he says that he spoke with Vernoica and that he will upgrade me to a Junior Suite on the 11th floor, a non-executive lower floor (the room I was in was on 19). Now it seems we have progress, why couldn't I have been upgraded in the first place?

Oscar calls the bellman over, and says that I will be switching rooms from 19th floor to the 11th floor, the bellman says "oh no" out loud and the Oscar gives him a weird look. What am I missing here?
Bellman takes me up to my old room to get my stuff, he encourages me to "see" the 11th floor before I move, I said I was over this situation and just wanted to get it done. Then I realized that Oscar had taken my key to the old room ,so had to go back downstairs to get another key to get my stuff out of the old room (why Oscar couldn't of let me keep the key to get my stuff out?!)

WATER IN FRONT OF DOOR!
Arriving on the 11th floor the room is next to the ice machine, they have towels on the floor and a Watch your Step sign not to slip and fall, the ice machine was leaking - right in front of my door.
Finally in the junior suite - it was bigger, but had no view! It had a view of the building next door (see the pix) OMG! What kind of upgrade is this? I go back online and check the website to see what is available, and sure enough, they have corner rooms, junior suites and more available. The Junior suits and rooms they show all have big windows with ocean view rooms, not rooms where the building next door is within thirty feet!

Whatever, I said let me just drop my things and head out of this hotel. On my way leaving the hotel to see the city, I see Oscar and tell him that I am not happy with the room and the reasons why. I ask
that he fulfill their promise, they have signs posted at his desk that say "satisfaction guarantee", I told him I was not happy and I would be back in a few hours and to please have something done.

Upon my return to the hotel, I speak with Oscar again (again the hotel is empty, no one around) and I asked what he had done for me, his reply nothing sir. At that point I decided I would be staying one night only, I tell him and ask that he refund my second night, he told me I would have to call Hilton Honors for the refund since I was already charged for the second night.

So the next day I leave the hotel after one horrible night.

I won't be going back there again!

CHARGED $40USD TO CALL HILTON DIAMOND DESK!
Oh yeah, here is one of the best parts! When I checked out the next day, I was charged nearly $40 (Charged $1,606 pescos $39.59 Usd) for calling that local number for the Hilton Honors Diamond Desk! I asked that they remove the charge, but I was told that they could not.

Wonderful!

On the bright side, they are converting a nearby hotel to a Sheraton!!

UPDATE: The hotel has offered to refund my telephone call to Hilton Honors & to refund the night I didn't stay. I still advise you to NOT stay at this property unless you want HEADACHES!
