Have stayed there a few times. Upgrades were not automatic, needed to "fight" for them. Also, from this hotel it is not as easy to walk to restaurants, bars etc.
the bright spot is it is closer than most hotels to Old San Juan and it just went through (maybe still going through) a renovation. A brand new spa was to be installed.

I have stayed there twice - wanted to also stay there last weekend, but couldn't use a cert of any sort and the lowest rates left were $325. Previous 2 stays - (1) full lounge access on special floor; (2) no access, though given a room on that floor (and HHonors had arranged an upgrade, too). Very nice pool area. I didn't mind the walk to Condado restaurants, etc, except during the occasional "tormenta".

I just stayed there over the past two weekends for one night - before and after a cruise out of San Juan.
Recently upgraded to gold and said I was getting an upgraded room but not sure that was the case! The hotel was PACKED weekend of 1/13/01 but didn't seem too bad 1/20/01. Has it's own private beach and entertainment during the day and the drinks are great! Nice, open hotel, reminded me of the Waikoloa Village on the big island in Hawaii. Checkin was a nightmare both times and took at least 25 minutes.
Did enjoy a dinner at Mortons (of Chicago)in the hotel. For 6 of us, was $30 from the airport, $15 to the port and for 2 of us $11 to Old San juan. Ripped off going to nearby hotel for the casino one night (can't recall the name right now).
We were upgraded to breakfast on the 9th floor but had to get validation done even though 'okd' by the front desk.
All in all, nice hotel and beautiful views.

I always stay at the Caribe when in SJ. I love the hotel. Always been upgraded on my Diamond.

Only complaint is that they closed the Casino a few years ago

Sounds Great. I will be checking in next Saturday. I wrote a letter to the HHonors manager on Duty and asked for an upgrade in advance as a Gold VIP of 4 years. She wrote back and was able to cinfirm a Ocean View Executive Level room for me. I'm looking forward to it!! I'll let you know my experience when I get back..

NY traveller -- I've stayed there a couple weeks ago on an award. Was upgraded to a junior suite. There was also a CD player in the room.

Executive lounge is quite good, with nice selection of drinks in the afternoon and great view of Condado. Executive check-in desk is much, much more efficient than the regular line (look for blue doors on the right when you enter the lobby). The newly remodeled grounds are quite good, very nice pool area. This hotel has the only private beach in San Juan. It is man-made and not very big though.

The hotel is relatively close to the Old Town. Taxi ride is a fixed rate of $6 (plus tip), or you can take a bus (M1 would cost you 50 cents, and B21 would cost 25 cents). Buses are brand new and air-conditioned, although timetable is non-existent.

Taxi to/from the airport is also fixed rate ($16 plus tip).

We stayed there in Feb 2000 and loved it! Location is great, with a private beach. Old San Juan is wonderful, and the El Yunque rainforest is a short trip away. We arranged a half-day trip to El Yunque via the tour desk at the Caribe. The hotel has an ATM on site, which we found handy, and the pool area was very nice.

As an option, the tour desk at the Normandie hotel next door has much better rates on various tours, including the one to El Yunque rainforest.

The Caribe Hitlon is one of the nicest hotels I have ever encountered. The views are amazing, the beach is great, and they have a HHonors lounge on the top of the main tower with afternoon appetizers available to ALL HHonors member---something I have only seen there. The in-room directory has the location. The ocean view rooms are obviously best, but the ones facing west on the LOWER tower are top-notch. You can get them with an award stay--just ask! The rooms have all been redone and are very nice and have a great Caribbean decor. Look for the VIP check-in if you are a HHonors VIP--it's in a small room off the lobby, opposite the desk. The lobby is open air and is real neat!

NY traveller -- Just make sure that you don't get yourself into the Garden Wing with a nasty garage view! In the main building, if you want a better Condado view, ask for an odd room number, the higher the number the better view (e.g., 519 would be better than 505). If you're Gold or above with HHonors, you should get one of the executive floors higher up as well. If you prefer a view that would combine ocean, beach, park and Normandie hotel (very interesting building, modeled after the SS Normandie), go for the room with an even number, the lower the number the better (e.g., 804 would be better than 820).

Hope it helps!
