The most commonly posed question about the new food/beverage benefit, which is now extended through the end of 2022, is how it works for multi-night stays. Here's what we do & don't know:
  • The credit does not accumulate over the duration of your stay. For instance, if you stay for 2 nights at a $15/night property, you cannot use the benefit toward a single $30 purchase.
  • Thus, the credit for a given day may only be used on that day. It expires afterward.
    • Hilton's FAQ insists that "[t]he credit does not 'expire' until the member checks out." This is, to put it politely, complete nonsense.
  • The Hilton FAQ states that "the daily amount re-sets each day to the maximum daily credit value at midnight." Unfortunately, this addition to the FAQ--made in Spring 2022--raises as many questions as it answers.
    • The Hilton FAQ states explicitly that "for a one-night hotel stay, a Hilton Honors member would receive one complimentary Daily F&B Credit; the member may use the credit on the day of arrival or day of departure." This would be the sensible approach, but the alleged "midnight reset" policy cannot be reconciled with it.
    • A similar problem exists for any stay of N nights. Unless a guest arrives after midnight on the first night, or departs before midnight on the last night, there will be N+1 "days" (using midnight as the demarcator) but only N usable F&B credits. For example, a guest arrives Monday for a two-night stay. That means the credits may be used only on two of the three "days," those being Monday evening; Tuesday; and Wednesday morning (departure).

Official Hilton benefit statement (updated for 2022) with FAQ at end:

To be fair, that was the menu that was given to me at check in and had been in my room for three days. The actual menus given out in the restaurant were more professional looking.

I have to say this change in breakfast has definitely resulted in my changing my booking preferences. I used to pretty much always gravitate to either the HGIs or Hilton but I have been rerouting to a lot more Embassy Suites and Homewood Suites where I at the very least know what I am getting for breakfast without the credit hassle. The loss of the made to order breakfast at HGIs really diminished their appeal.

Agree-HGI used to be the go to property when traveling on business since we always knew we would have a comfortable bed, fridge in the room, & real breakfast to start the day (one of my partners is a diabetic so he needs a real breakfast each morning). I have been intentionally booking away from Hilton in general since this started & this past weekend only served to reinforce that it was the right move. 3 days at the DT Crystal City in DC required 3 conversations w/the front desk, over 3 days, to get the credit applied properly. I sincerely hope that the $5 - $7 the hotel ended up charging me above the F&B credit is really worth it to them in exchange for the continued loss of my company's business (rhetorical-I know Hilton has already decided it is).

Embassy and Homewood when reasonable, have always been the better choice for me! Suites, breakfast, weekday drinks. Saves a lot of people a lot of frustration when they expect these things each time.

I too no longer seek out HGI locations. I had pretty negative experiences with HGI since COVID and the downgraded breakfast benefit did not factor into the cleanliness/service issues I had as that was a separate issue (closed restaurants, me sleeping too late, etc.) that I did not use anyway. But this is a definite benefit downgrade for Gold/Diamond at HGI. I am only Gold, for now (probably won't be after next year...) but it seems like a real easy way to draw a line in benefit at HGI would be to provide a greater benefit to Diamond.

I wonder how these changes are impacting HGI as a whole also. Rates seem to be through the roof so they must be doing fine with these changes.

Agree about ES-that is the exception now for my anything but Hilton rule. If I have 5 people on a trip, not all of whom have status, trying to get separate bills for breakfast/dinner for everyone, to ensure the credit is applied to those who are entitled to it, plus then dealing w/the front desk to get it applied, is just not worth the time & effort.

My usual HGI stay is coming up, and I booked elsewhere and will continue to do so. Dealing with incompetent front desk employees regarding the breakfast credit is frustrating and not worth my time. As long as the USA Hiltons continues with this nonsense, they won't be seeing me. Hilton elsewhere has been marvelous.

That's a harsh and unnecessary comment about FD staff. If the credit issue has been communicated by property management and/or HH the way it's been communicated on this site, FD staff may be working with limited and/or inaccurate information. Combine lack of communication with property staffing issues, and your comment is off-base and unfair to those who are trying to apply the credit properly.

Does anyone think this will expand to Europe and Asian Hiltons? I'm not sure how much a 15 Euro credit would give me in London or Paris.

HGI was my go to when I had other options in the area, due to the cooked to order breakfast for Diamonds. I paid a little more for this. The F&B credit is a real PIA, ask for some french toast or pancakes with your two eggs, you get charged for the full meal. No side prices or options on the menu. You want the continental choices with the cooked to order, some places have charged me full price extra, some say they should, but they will let it slide.

I have started to move my stays to other chains, where there is a breakfast joint walking distance. Too bad, I enjoyed Hilton Garden Inn.

Stayed the weekend @ the DT Rosemead (CA)-rec'd $18/day credit & it actually was enough for many of the menu items offered for both dinner (salads, burgers, pizza) & breakfast, which was menu only. Having said that, the property is being flogged to death & I doubt I would stay there again until/unless it is fully renovated.

Yes I agree. The HGI breakfast put the brand 2 notches above its direct competitor Courtyard by Marriott. HGI should and will bring back the full breakfast option soon is my guess.

Been a Diamond for a number of years. When they had the lounges open and offered free breakfast I wouldnt even have considered staying anywhere else. Now I just look for the best property wherever I am, and thats usually a Hyatt or Marriott. Embassy Suites is still high on my list, but HGI and Hilton are last choices. Understand some people like the credit. I much prefer the free breakfast.
