The most commonly posed question about the new food/beverage benefit, which is now extended through the end of 2022, is how it works for multi-night stays. Here's what we do & don't know:
  • The credit does not accumulate over the duration of your stay. For instance, if you stay for 2 nights at a $15/night property, you cannot use the benefit toward a single $30 purchase at one time.
  • Thus, the credit for a given day may only be used on that day. It expires afterward.
  • Unfortunately, Hilton has offered no clear explanation of what qualifies as a "day." (FAQ 24 purports to give an answer, but makes no sense.)
    • Some properties reportedly apply a "calendar day" rule. For a stay arriving Monday and departing Wednesday (two nights, ergo two credits), this means the credit is available only on Monday (first credit) and Tuesday (second credit), with no option for breakfast use on Wednesday.
    • Other properties don't use midnight as the cutoff, but instead allow use of a day's credit until the bar/restaurant closes, even if that occurs early the next calendar day (say, 1am). This interpretation also precludes use for breakfast on the day of departure.
      • Neither of these approaches makes logical sense, given that on a one-night stay the credit may be used either on day of arrival or day of departure, per FAQ 8.
    • A few properties reportedly use the standard checkin or checkout time as the dividing line: guest arriving Monday has until noon or 3pm Tuesday to use the first day's credit (or whatever the checkin/checkout times for that property are).

Official Hilton benefit statement (updated for 2022) with FAQ at end:

Through 2022, we’ll be offering Gold and Diamond members a Daily Food & Beverage Credit at our luxury, full-service, lifestyle and Hilton Garden Inn hotel brands in the U.S. This credit is offered as part of the Hilton Honors MyWay benefits, in place of the prior complimentary continental breakfast.

Starting February 1, 2022, we are also increasing the credit amounts across our full-service and lifestyle brands from $12 to $15 per night, and $15 to $18 per night in select markets.

Traveling with a friend or loved one? You and up to one additional guest registered to the same room will each receive the daily credit. The credit applies to the one guest room in which the Elite member is staying and will be provided for each night of your stay.

You can use the credit towards eligible food and beverage purchases that are charged to your room—any time of day—at designated outlets throughout the property. Refreshing beverages? Check. Appetizer or desert with dinner? Check, check. Breakfast at the restaurant? Sure. Breakfast to go? No problem.

Gold members can choose to receive the Daily Food & Beverage Credit or Bonus Points as part of their Hilton Honors MyWay benefits. Diamond members will receive both the Daily Food & Beverage Credit and 1,000 Bonus Points at all brands listed above except for Hilton Garden Inn, where Diamond members can choose between the credit or 750 Bonus Points. Visit your MyWay profile through your Hilton Honors account online or through the Hilton Honors app to select your preferences before your next stay.

The credit will be applied automatically to your bill for any eligible purchases charged to your room prior to checkout.

25. How will the F&B Credit work between January 1-February 1, 2022?

Stays that take place between January 1-February 1, 2022 will receive the complimentary Daily F&B Credit amounts announced in 2021. The increased credit amounts for Hilton’s lifestyle and full-service brands will go into effect on February 1, 2022 and beyond.

27. How will the Hilton Honors Daily F&B Credit be handled at hotels with Executive Lounges?

At hotels that have an Executive Lounge that offers complimentary breakfast, Diamond members and Gold members upgraded to Executive Lounge access will not receive the Daily F&B Credit. These hotels will provide the Daily F&B Credit to Gold members not upgraded to Executive Lounge access.

28. Is the Daily F&B Credit now a permanent benefit?

In addition to increasing credit amounts across the lifestyle and full-service brands, Hilton Honors is extending the complimentary Daily Food & Beverage Credit into 2022 and will continue to evaluate this benefit to make the best decisions for our members going forward.

Stayed at Grand Wailea a couple weeks ago. This was a 2 night stay on back to back reservations.

Day 1 of checking. $22 Lunch was credited on the folio for the first reservation.
Day 2 breakfast (this didn't apply to the first reservation, but was put on the second reservation.
Day 2 dinner/Day 3 breakfast. Full $50 (2x$25 was applied to the second reservation.

Since we didn't use the full $50 credit for the first reservation, I was going to ask the front desk rep to move the Day 2 breakfast to the first reservation and then apply the missing credit. However, the rep said I can just add the missing credit to the 2nd reservation. So, we got out full $100 for a 2-night stay.

Couple interesting things. rep joked that the new system gives them more job security. She also says that this will start to be automatically applied in the future. Not sure what that means. If Hilton would just allow any missing credit to roll over until the stay is over, that would solve at least some of admin challenges.

As far as the breakfast, for $25, you can get a coffee/breakfast sandwich/fried potatoes. I believe that was $18 + the 50 cents they charge for water + tax + tip which will get you to $25. I can't comment on how the Diamond breakfast was here before. Personally, I would have preferred the continental spread we had at Doubletree Hilo a couple years back.

The franchisee has the power right now with how one company can have a full portfolio of brands with all of the major players under one roof. Not the parent company, not the travelling public and sure as hell not the employees.

The average traveler has no clue about the app, benefits, credits - how to use/not use them, etc. While it may tick off an ultra niche minority of people on this site, for 99% of HH members this is a non-issue.

There have been webinars for properties over the past month or two about how this credit process is going to become more automated. What do you think that tells you about the future of the credit in general?
Crazy that some internet user's minor inconvenience isn't the center of the universe on this study. While it is silly they couldn't get the IT right for this test, the real data is in the numbers. Hotels have a lot of large-scale issues to solve for right now. Hilton is basically doing the market research for the hotel industry on this. How will it impact costs? Is it helping to be more flexible in labor costs? Is it driving up incremental spend? More profitable items? How many people will actually leave? All eyes are on this data.

Having spent many years in a large corporation, I've been involved in a lot of tests. Often, they are half-baked at launch, but there is an important theory or goal at play that overrides a lot of sensible pieces. If you're trying to get your feedback heard it needs to be more purposeful than "I hate change, I hate it because the IT isn't there, or the big, evil, business should be spending more money on its cost structure".

Completely agree. People forget this is a ultra niche website for an already niche group of travelers. Comparing US Hiltons to EU Hiltons or questioning how they can afford to do this is nonsense. It is clearly working out for them.

I fully expect this to be rolled out more concretely with the credit process more automated, per your comment on webinars. I think Hilton corporate and franchisees only consider this program a success.

This post underscores what happens when a travel provider like HH fails to use its SM reps in a manner that prevents information like this from being released by third parties first. I'll again use the Southwest example...they actively work with their reps on this forum to share information as early as possible, seek feedback, and try to head off problems in advance. In fact, one of their senior digital products staff frequently posts beta projects and seeks related feedback. This customer-centric approach likely could avoid debacles like this f&b mess.

Can’t speak for this thread being around indefinitely. However, the subject will remain as: hotels want the breakfast budget to be less of a drag on their income statement; this is a way to try to do just that; and this is a monkey-see-monkey-do industry that becomes only more so as market concentration/power increases to the detriment of consumers (and even to the detriment of the average hotel employee).

Expect more automation of this thing, because it’s an investment that is intended to spread.

While you aren't necessarily wrong, I believe there is much more at play. The elephant in the room is labor costs. There is little to no chance that it gets better anytime soon for hotels. Just from my perspective, I've been to a bunch of hotels where the breakfast is absolutely slammed (because it is included for many people) meanwhile, lunch and dinner are lopsided in that traffic. It would make sense to me to see how you can spread out that business and maximize the labor you do have. If the credit isn't for breakfast only, it would make sense that breakfast wouldn't be the most popular meal there.

I would bet even more on them trying to see how much spend it can deliver. If I was a restaurant/hotel, I would probably be more interested in people buying my dinner vs breakfast. How many times is a breakfast bill more expensive than dinner? Bottles of wine, seafood, steaks, etc. That's your flagship meal. What better way to get people there? Even if the credit was used just for alcohol, I would assume a hotel would still come out ahead vs a breakfast.

Operating a restaurant for dinner is more expensive for hotels than operating a facility for breakfast. And when people are even lamenting the quality of the breakfast at these Hilton hotels going cheap on breakfast, what should we expect from dinner from cheap Hilton restaurants?

Labor costs may be a pretty poor excuse for what’s going on with hotel breakfasts. How are wages rising in the industry? Not as strongly as elsewhere in the economy. And it’s foodstuff that seems to have risen faster in prices during this year than hotel wages around the cheaper Hilton properties.

It’s nice that this thread has people that know what they’re talking about. Labor is definitely the elephant in the room.

When staffing is this weak, there’s one obvious result (per your comment)

Thank you for the compliment, but it’s not necessary,

Labor quits more when the wages are such that the employment with the employer/industry is not good and an opportunity cost in itself as other employment opportunities are better for better wages and working conditions than being a “stand by your man” type.

The elephant in the breakfast rooms are the food costs. Lard is up a huge percentage during the pandemic. And other food products like chicken, beef and more have gone up substantially too. Even the price of carbs has risen.

Cheap hotel owners are squeezing on labor costs and don’t like what they see with food prices.

Read the article. As others have pointed out to you, labor is getting expensive for hospitality in particular. Hotels have to operate within this constraint either by cutting or changing services that require labor. It’s pretty straightforward.

Looking at a comparison of Hilton's Q3 2019 (pre-Covid) and Hilton's Q3 2021 (most recent publicly available information):
Occupancy, 3 months ending September 30 - 2019 - 79.1% 2021 - 64.3% -> almost 15% less rooms are occupied
ADR, 3 months ending September 30 - 2019 - $145.11 2021 - $140.57 -> For the 15% less rooms being occupied, the hotels are getting a lower room rate for them
RevPAR, 3 months ending September 30 - 2019 - $114.76 2021 - $90.39 -> Well, this is just multiplying the first two together, it's horrible, for each room in the hotel the hotels are collecting 21% less revenue

Comparing the 9-month YTD for 2019 vs. 2021 is even more awful for the hotels. Hilton has clearly lost a lot of customers relative to pre-Covid times and is nowhere near recovering to pre-pandemic levels. There are less customers paying lower rates (despite inflation) for their rooms.

A lot of that decline is concentrated in lockdown markets like Europe, and in business hotels in urban markets. I believe the Road Goes on Forever works at a limited service hotel in the US. Frankly many of those hotels in US markets have already recovered past 2019 levels, with higher rates.
