Do you want 750 points or a free breakfast.

I recently stayed at an HGI and was using points to pay for my stay (because they don't earn interest) and was actually asked the question in the title for this thread when I checked in.

It was an easy decision !!!!

Choice of daily breakfast for two or 750 bonus points per stay is the standard "My Way" benefit for both Gold and Diamond elites at Hilton Garden Inn, and has been for years.

As noted by MS02113, this is standard:
From hilton.com:
MY WAY DIAMOND MEMBERSHIP HOTEL BENEFITS:
...

Hilton Garden Inn™
  • 750 Hilton Honors Bonus Points per stay or a complimentary Hot Cooked-to-Order Breakfast for you and up to one guest registered to the same room each day of your stay

I always opt for the breakfast, as the times I have preferred points they've failed to post.

I choose the breakfast if I can have it, but sometimes I check out very early and b/fast is not an option.

Normally the 750 points get credited if my preference is set to points.

Sometimes hotels believe their own points valuations!!

Having said that I hadn't considered the obvious if one is checking out too early or if the employer is paying.

If I am traveling on business, then I prefer the points. I get additional points for paying for my breakfast.

If I am traveling on vacation I prefer the free breakfast. No need to spend extra money!

My default setting is points, and I always feel like I hit a mini jackpot when the HGI gives both the points and free breakfast to Diamonds.

Currently staying at a Hampton Inn (~$1k paid stay). When I checked in the clerk asked if I would like double points for my stay or two items from their snack box). I chose the points.

This question is basically asking "are you traveling for work or leisure."

Work -> points. I get breakfast either reimbursed or outside the hotel entirely.

Leisure -> breakfast.

If you're on a corporate rate, always check if the rate includes breakfast before choosing.

If the rate includes breakfast, you can select points and get both.

Set your Honors preferences to points, then take the breakfast at the hotel.

You will probably end up with both...

Additionally, not everyone eats breakfast.

This has been my experience, no matter what I choose at the hotel I almost always got the points because that's what was selected on my account.

Depends on the company for reimbursing breakfast, my boss would have kicked my ... if I purchased a $15 breakfast knowing it could have been free. "Luckily" traveling for work I'm usually out of the hotel by 5AM so it doesn't matter..
