I've had this happen twice, once from each perspective.
Holiday Inn - after checking in I walked into the room and there were a couple of guests lying on the bed watching TV!
Mercure - we checked in quite late. At about 2AM a security guard just let himself in and walked into the room, that was fairly alarming! It seemed likely he believed the room was empty and was probably going in to have a quick snooze!
In the case of the Mercure...there were just holes in the door frame where the dead bolt was supposed to be.

One time in a Best Western in Paris, I went to sleep in the afternoon due to the jet lag. I woke up when I felt a presence in the room. There was a woman replenishing the minibar.....

Yes, they did comp the room. Seems as this is not an unusual occurrence based on responses!

I never used the dead bolt until I read this thread, and now that I do I’ve had three people try to get in my room (without announcing themselves) in the past 10 stays.

Had something similar happen one time at a HGI in Twinsburgh, OH, checked in with my wife, got the room keycard, went to open the room door, the light flashed green, but, it felt like it was dead bolted from the inside. Finally after a couple tries I was about to go back to the front desk when a young lady opened the door from the inside. I'm not sure who was more shocked, her or us. I said may be we got the wrong room, as it was at the very end of the hall and a handicapped accessible room, as thats all they had left. Girl says no, no, it's me. I'm in the wrong room, I'm sorry, and quickly leaves. I'm a bit stunned as to what has happened and I don't feel safe in the room so I walk over to the room phone to call the front desk and report the situation and ask to be placed in another room if possible. As I begin speaking to the front desk agent, we get a knock on the door, I look through the peephole and its a guy in a hotel maintenance uniform, he's shocked to see me, asks were the girl that was in the room was and where she went. It suddenly dawned on me, this guy worked there and had a master keycard, and he figured the room would be unoccupied and he could hook up with the girl for free without anyone knowing. Boy was he wrong. The front deskmanager came to the room,, I explained what happen, and they terminated the guy right there, comp'd my room and gave me one free night cert. Cannot make this stuff up.

This nearly occurred to me was in a Harrahs casino in Vegas. I was getting ready to leave my room when 2 people were standing at the door. They had been assigned our room, but saw the DND tag on the door.
The only thing I could think happened was the night before, I asked for a late checkout. Instead of typing in the correct time, they must've checked us out and reset the room for the check-in desk to assign.
That didn't deter me from staying at Harrahs again though. In fact, I'm doing in again within the next few weeks!

I've been the intruder in the situation; airport Hampton and came back to find a flight attendant in my bed.
Unfortunately, he was called Gerard or something like that. (I know this because I saw his uniform, and his companion called him by name). Desk clerk was completely nonchalant about the incident.
Got the room comped (1-night stay) by the manager on checkout.
