I have Holton Diamon status, and have recently started using the app to do my booking.

Does anyone have any experience of whether doing the digital check-in (and choosing a room) effects your chances of getting a free upgrade?

I feel a bit silly going to the desk when I arrive saying “I’ve already checked in and chosen a room, but I want you to check if I can have an upgrade”.

Yes, in my experience, checking in online and choosing a room definitely affects the chance of an upgrade. Usually the room you book is the room you get. If I can see that I've been pre-upgraded when attempting online check in, I go ahead and choose a room, otherwise I wait until arrival and see if there's any upgrades available. Sometimes upgrades are given on the morning of check in, so keep checking back to see if you've been upgraded.

Agree...there are many discussions here on the plus and minus of on line check in. Summary- if you are a hotel where an upgrade really matters- not hotels like Embassy Suites which typically don't have real upgrades, don't use on line check in. You could call to ask on check in day, or ask when you arrive.
