:-: Welcome to the Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi Wiki! :-:
Notes: All prices are in US Dollars and are exclusive of taxes unless specified (by ++)

Tax Information
• 10% Service Charge (levied by resort. For info on this and how it's distributed, see this post)
• 16% T-GST (Tourist Goods & Services Tax, levied by the Maldivian government, current as of Jan 1, 2023). Old 2022 rate was 12%.
• Total tax is 27.2%, not 26% as one would think. Example; $100 + 10% = $110, then add 16% on to $110 for a total of $127.20.
• Tip: To work out prices before the 27.2% taxes, multiply by 0.7862, i.e; 127.2 * 0.7862 = 100
• A Green Tax of $6pp/pn (levied by the Maldivian government) has been introduced starting from 1 November 2015. Points/Redemption bookings are exempt from the tax for up to two guests per room

Booking with points
• Bookings must be cancelled 30 days prior in order to avoid one full night's charge at BAR. (some days cancellation period is 14 days check your reservation details for the exact applicable cancellation policy)
• Website and phone agents state that a cash deposit equivalent to the BAR per night will be taken when booking stays with points. This is an error. NO CASH DEPOSIT IS TAKEN WHEN MAKING A POINTS BOOKING
• Free night certificate: The phone agent states that a cash deposit equivalent to the BAR per night will be taken when booking your free night. This is an error. NO CASH DEPOSIT IS TAKEN WHEN USING YOUR FREE NIGHT CERTIFICATE
This hotel is extremely popular. Rooms are released to be booked with points about 1 year in advance. It seems to be a partially manual process so it's not an exact science. After being released those rooms get booked within a matter of minutes. If you have specific dates you want you need to book them one at a time a year in advance, or risk booking last minute. Yes that makes it hard to use the 5th night free. You can book 5 individual nights and cancel them all to rebook getting the 5th night free, but there's only about a 50% chance the rooms go back into inventory so it's risky. There is no secret, just check Hilton.com all the time. If you don't want to do that, someone else will and they'll get the rooms.

Accommodation:
At opening the resort defined Beach Villas as the lowest category of accommodation (only this category bookable with points). The next highest category was Reef Villas then above that, the Overwater Villas. Note: villas on the Private Island do not count.
This will change in 2020. Quote from the resort "Please be informed that for next year we have changed our villa category. Kindly note that the Reef Villa will be our base category, next will be the Overwater Villa and then the Beach Villa. Basically the Beach Villa will be a higher category compared to reef Villa and Overwater Villa."
See this post for the conversation related to this. Pricing has changed as well to reflect this. See below for 2020 pricing.
Note that as of August 2019 the BV is still available to book on points in 2020. This may change, however.

Trip Report 4July-11July

This is a little overdue, but I decided it may be helpful to have a full trip report of my recent experience at the WA Maldives from last month (trip was for 2, same-sex married couple to anyone concerned about that). We booked 7 nights using Hilton Free Night Awards. Our trip was initially supposed to be 3 nights in Malaysia + 4 nights at WA Maldives. Due to covid, we switched it to 3 nights StR instead, but since Maldives forbade interisland transfers, we decided to just spend the entire week at WA. We arrived to the Maldives in a combination of Southwest, Swiss first, and Etihad business. Upon arriving to the airport, make sure to use the business/first class line for immigration. It was difficult to notice, but made immigration much much faster. They didn't really check who used it, so it was more or less free for all. That said, my review is going to be food review heavy (since I love love food).

General
  • Airport: We quickly spotted hotel staff with a WA sign after exiting immigration area, and were quickly whisked away to the yacht transport
  • Yacht: Transport was extremely bumpy for the first 20-30min, that I almost fell out of the bathroom when coming out, but I still cannot believe it is $800/RT. They offered complimentary snacks and drinks on board.
  • Arrival: We were offered welcome drinks, and then our concierge gave us a resort tour, and that was when we exchanged WhatsApp contact information to keep in touch during the stay. Since we arrived at around 10am resort time, we were temporarily placed in an overwater villa as a day-use villa, and then at around 4pm, we were whisked to our actual room
  • Bikes: Riding around the property was very convenient, and made it a breeze to get from one end of the property to the other end in around 10min leisurely
  • Snorkeling: We mainly did our snorkeling around the diving center, as we were told that was the best area (house reef)
  • Activities: While there were many to choose from, many were expensive, so we opted to do the glass bottom kayaking around the resort for an hour for $30 after tax. We also joined a sunset fishing excursion ($135 after tax/pp) and were able to keep the fish for dinner at either Peacock Alley or Tasting Table. Sunset fishing was the best deal (still overpriced for fishing), but the boat was upscale and clean, and we even got cold towels after it was all over and it was relaxing to watch the sun set while floating in the ocean.
  • Laundry: We decided to submit 2 pairs of pants for laundry service prior to their 11am cutoff, and they were delivered back to us before dinner
  • Happy Hour: many drinks to choose from, but the menu stays the same day to day. Pina colada was not on the menu included for the hilton honors happy hour, but they never charged us when we got it (pina colada was our favorite drink during happy hour). There is also a chefs special every day, and those were rather creative and I made sure to try it every time. Canapes for us were either roasted nuts or truffle potato chips.
  • Lighting: Shoutout to the amazing team that designed the lighting on the resort, both indoors and outdoors. Makes walking around at night very comforting and immersive
  • Foliage: Amazing. Just amazing. I cannot believe the island is completely artificial. The resort is packed full of plants, some very large ones as if they have been there for many decades. Flowers were abundant, and it felt very islandy, and well curated.
Room
  • We stayed in the base reef villa, and failed to get any type of upgrade during the stay. I believe our concierge mentioned that it was 70% full when we were there.
  • There was housekeeping twice a day (morning housekeeping usually happened around breakfast time - noon, and turndown service was around 7pm-9pm)
  • Every evening, there was some kind of turndown service snack left by housekeeping (and never repeated during our 7 day stay, and the jars are super cute). It is the same housekeeper who works on your villa the entire stay. For July 4, they even left an entire cake for us during turn down service, decked out in red/white/blue and a few cookies. Very unexpected to be celebrating July 4th on the other side of the world in the Maldives.
  • Outdoor shower was unbelievably fun, both for the overwater villa, and the reef villas.
  • Almost everything can be controlled through an iPad (lighting, blinds, fan)
  • The scent that they use inside the room is intoxicatingly delicious. We were obsessed. Housekeeping would give a few extra spritzes before leaving, making the room smell like heaven. Difficult to describe. If you want to maximize the scent, place the bottle of scent sticks under a fan on high.

Service
  • Throughout the stay, we were greeted by various high level staff, such as Guest Relations, head chefs of various restaurants, directory of culinary experience, etc to name just a few
  • Upon arriving to our actual villa, we received a large celebratory honeymoon cake, as well as a large platter of fruits. The cake was two tiered and very delicious.
  • Buggy requests completed exclusively by your concierge, at least it was the case for us
  • Lady at the diving center who helped us prepare the snorkeling gear was very nice, and packed everything we needed (snorkel & fins) into a carrying bag for ease of bringing around the resort
Food
We thought that we would be hungry at the resort since we didn't want to spend too much on food, thus we brought many snacks from home. We ended not needing any of the snacks, since we ended up indulging ourselves in many of the restaurants at the resort. Breakfast helped save a lot of money during the stay though, and kept us full until at least our dinner reservations usually at 7pm. I will breakdown our costs below (total after tax for two people, and my personal rating):
  • Breakfast (free with Diamond status): The spread was mostly predictable day to day, as some food items never change (noodle bar, congee, charcuterie, cheese), and many items change but remain the same type of item (pork sausage one day, chicken the next, etc). Dessert was definitely one of their strong suits, unfortunately the crispiness of the pastry still succumbed to the humid Maldivian weather. Their fruit variety was also exciting, sometimes with longan, rambutan, dragon fruit (probably season dependent). You can also make custom juice orders depending on what they have available, we always asked for mango juice and it was hit or miss whether they were offering it.
  • Shimizu ($231 7.5/10): Sushi rolls were filling and a good deal, the fresh Maldivian reef fish was cooked well. Tempura was a little oily. Best restaurant for panoramic view of the resort
    • soft shell crab roll 7/10
    • tempura shrimp sushi 7/10
    • foie gras in orange miso sauce 8/10
    • selection of veggie tempura 7/10
    • Maldivian reef fish 7.5/10
  • Yasmeen ($343 8/10): HUGE PORTIONS, but also because we got their set menu for 2. The variety was the most exciting part, plus watching the cook prepare fresh pita and other arabic breads in their flaming oven. We chose the meat main course, and most of the meats were cooked perfectly. The restaurant was decorated very nicely as well. Make sure to come here with an empty stomach if you want to finish everything on the set menu, and don't stuff yourself with the bread
  • Li Long ($488 4/10): Here, was also got the set menu, and we were severely disappointed. Peking duck was chewy, meat was powdery. Everything was too salty and overpowering, nothing like delicate and balanced flavors of Chinese cuisine. For example, they paired an overly flavored black pepper wagyu with salty fried rice, white rice would've been better. Similarly, their XO sauce pales in comparison to even the ones you could find at a typical Chinese grocer. Would not recommend, however the restaurant itself looks stunning.
    • peking duck 2/10
    • hot and sour soup with seafood 6/10
    • wok fried fresh maldivian lobster with ginger and spring onions 7/10
    • stir fried mixed seafood with asparagus in XO sauce 5/10
    • black pepper wagyu beef tenderloin 4/10
    • Fu Jian style fried rice with roasted duck and chicken 2/10
    • chilled lemongrass jelly with lime sorbet 8/10
  • Terra ($821 9.5/10): Shocking price, but I personally thought the set menu was worth it. Make sure to arrive first to sit at the highest bamboo nest! I have been to over a handful of 3 michelin stars, and although less imaginative compared to those experiences, the food was consistently delicious! Portions were well balanced, and the presentation of the food was fantastic (especially the sorbet served in an ice tear drop). I would highly recommend splurging on this experience if you had to choose just one restaurant.
  • Tasting Table ($148 9/10): Doesn't exactly count, since we had gone sunset fishing and caught some humpback and red snappers. They charged a fee to have the fish cooked. Fish is my favorite meat protein, and they cooked the fish absolutely perfectly. There was nothing to fault them for. Paired with the perfect garlic butter, and curry sauce made for a perfect meal. We were able to pick two sides as well, but the fries and fried rice were only alright.
  • Amber ($73 7/10): We got two drinks, and an oyster rockefeller. Fun experience watching the sunset, and the drinks were pretty good!
  • The Ledge ($493 9/10): Maybe don't be like us and order 10 items for 2... but it was the only way to try everything we wanted! The head chef was amazing, and invited us for a kitchen tour, and insisted we take a picture with the entire team (it was a slow day for them), and also insisted treating us to a dessert even though we were very very full!
    • garlic bread 7/10
    • fish and chips 7/10
    • steak frites 7/10
    • jamaican chicken & lime crema 9/10
    • beef marmalade & house pickles 9/10
    • peri peri chicken 8.5/10
    • maldivian lobster with garlic brown butter sauce 8/10
    • spiced lamb chops 7/10
    • ledge burger 4/10
    • island pavlova (compliments of the chef 9/10)
  • Nava ($91 5/10): It was average food, with ok ambience. Wouldn't really recommend unless you're trying to save some money
    • lamb shawarma 4/10
    • pizza vegetariana 6/10
    • frutti di mare 2/10 (so bad we sent it back), seafood was unbelievably chewy
Weather
  • We went in the middle of rainy season, and yet, we only had 1.5 days of rain during our 7 days. We had one day that was completely clear, and the other days were a mix of clouds and clear skies
  • Dark Sky: When the sky is clear, you can truly make out the milky way. It wasn't too hard to find an area on the resort that is dark
  • No need to trust the weather reports, they were never correct
Covid
  • Covid Test: The staff member came into our villa and did both an oral swab, and a nasal swab (separately). The end cost was $70/pp
  • Masks: Everyone was masked, and I did not feel unsafe especially since I was already vaccinated. They did, however, immediately encourage everyone to demask once we arrived at the resort since "it's a vacation, time to relax!". Masks were only required when entering the breakfast buffet room
Final Thoughts
All around amazing experience at the WA, and would recommend anyone planning to go to the Maldives to come here. As much as I enjoyed our 7 night stay, the resort, however, was devoid of any authentic/genuine cultural experience, and it was truly just a luxury resort in the middle of the ocean. I would imagine a stay of ~4nights would be sufficient to experience the best parts of the resort, and then continuing onwards to something perhaps more culturally fulfilling (of course that is very dependent on the type of traveler you are). The service felt genuine, and everything went very smoothly without any hiccups throughout our stay. To those looking forward to their first trip to the WA, I hope this review helped!

Might be an odd question but did you ever take any of the restaurant leftovers with you after you were finished or do they not give you an option?

We never asked to take any leftovers since we couldn't heat up the food, and we knew we would be too full to eat any leftover day after day

Approx 120 days before my booked visit by booking will no longer let me cancel in the app despite being inside the cancellation window (I don’t want to cancel just curious as to why it’s changed) and under payment information it no longer has my card just the text waive GTD/deposit. Does anyone have any idea why?

Didnt realize there wasn’t a microwave in the room but that makes sense.

same thing happened to me too. Seems like the hotel locks you in so you can only cancel through them. I sent them an email and they cancelled it immediately.

I have the same thing on my current booking. Technically I was supposed to have paid the full amount in advance, but that was waived at booking. T&C still shows a cancellation before date so would just have to contact the resort direct.

Not an odd question to me since I have young kids, so sometimes grabbing something that doesn't really go bad like fries or some bread made sense in case they got hungry later on. That said, they make you sign a waiver so that you don't try to blame them if you get sick.

5, 6, and 7 are gone, but you can still get 5 or 6 consecutive nights right now starting from 9/29. Might be gone too very soon...
