Welcome to the Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi Wiki!
Notes: All prices are in US Dollars and are exclusive of taxes unless specified (by ++)

EXTRA CHARGES - BE AWARE FOLKS!
• A compulsory Christmas Eve Gala Dinner supplement of US$488++ per adult and US$150++ per child applies for stays on 24 December 2019
• A compulsory New Year's Eve Dinner supplement of US$800++ per adult and US$150++ per child applies for stays on 31 December 2019
This lamb to the slaughter approach will force a couple to cough up an extra $3176.63, or a family of 4 (2 adults & 2 kids) $3915.83, if you want to celebrate Xmas and New Years here

Expected Opening: July 01, 2019 (according to official website, see below for link)

There is currently not a lot of solid information on this resort, its prices, room types and amenities. More information will be added bit by bit as it becomes available

Tax Information
• 10% Service Charge (levied by resort)
• 12% T-GST (Tourist Goods & Services Tax, levied by the Maldivian government, current as of Oct 1, 2014)
• Total tax is 23.2%, not 22% as one would think. Example; $100 + 10% = $110, then add 12% on to $110 for a total of $123.20
• • Tip: To work out prices before the 23.2% taxes, multiply by 0.81169, i.e; 123.2 * 0.81169 = 100
• A new Green Tax of $6pp/pn (levied by the Maldivian government) has been introduced starting from 1 November 2015. Points/Redemption bookings are exempt from the tax for up to two guests per room
Note: The $8pp/pn Bed Tax (previously levied by the Maldivian government) was abolished on Dec 1, 2014

As someone who has not been to The Maldives before, I was wondering if it was possible to "upgrade" to the half board package when booking on points (I know it is possible to upgrade rooms for cash payment) and is the dinner on a half board package restricted to just one restaurant typically or a credit per person that can be used at any of the restaurants? I notice that WA is selling half board packages but it does not have any details.

They charge money for even Conrad guests after 5pm from what I've read directly. Something like $85 per person.

You may have to Seaplane back to MLE, then pick up the yacht back to WA.

That's exactly what I'm going to do. Although I'm glad my return WA transfer is confirmed at $370++ return. As if I were looking at $2k for a boat ride for a 3 day stay I'd be booking another resort instead for cash.

Waiting for response from TMA , about private seaplane transfer from Rangali to Ithafushi on DEC 31 2019, we are a bigger group of returning guests to Rangali (most of us >10 times). If anyone interested in joining us, please let me know.

Another option is a 3hr yacht transfer from Rangali to Ithaafushi but not sure how that compares cost wise vs seaplane.

I've never been to the Maldives. Although, I've been to the Turks and Caicos and I and my family loved it. I want to know for those of you who have been to the Maldives, do you think this resort would even have a slight resemblance of what the true Maldives is like? I know it's an impossible question to answer given no one has been to this resort yet but luxury (and top-notch food - coming from Tokyo) is something of utmost importance during this trip. But I'd like to know if you think a westernized mega-resort like this on a manufactured island can even come close to the true experience - especially being so close to the capital with brightly lit islands in the distance at night.

This resort is playing games and it is not a good start.

Yes, it has already been reported that the reservations online regarding the yacht transfer is now to "$370+ each way". My biggest grip right now is that there is zero notification from the property about this unilateral change. I have received no email, no call etc about the changes and I expect no one else got any notification about their changes too.

This is definitely unsavoury. Imagine buying a green coloured car, and then whilst waiting for the car to be delivered, the dealer decides you can have a blue one instead.

That's what they do. When I emailed them 5 weeks ago, they offered to let me know about points redemption availability once it opens. Although, I never responded to the email with a "Yes, please do." I'd still expect a proactive response on their part especially with a 7* hotel. They keep track of who contacted them first don't they? But never got one. Maybe I'm just too used to good service even when one is not a confirmed guest.

People love to complain here about being nickle and dimed by resorts or charged a ridiculous amount for a yacht transfer, but until people start leaving bad reviews on TripAdvisor these hotels are going to continue to do this.

Also, when people shrug off the $15 room service charge because it's just $15 on top of thousands of dollars they're already spending, of course the hotel is going to do this because they receive no backlash for it.

Are they going to automatically honor the 370++ return price for everyone who booked before they changed it online, or are they just going to bill everyone for 370++ each way and then only reduce it if an early booker complains and/or shows them their booking confirmation saying "370++ return"?

I think I know the answer to this.

And what happens if I, an early booker, am staying at the resort, and I blurt out to a late booker in the villa next to me "HAHAHA I'm only paying $370 return! Sucker!" and then he complains to the resort that he's being charged more for the transfer?

Because I would totally do that.

You're killing me! I've yet to see something like that but would make great comedy especially during the afternoon "high tea" in the lobby.

They did not get back to me about the points either, but have been very responsive to all my emails to them. I have no complaints.

Everyone just needs to take a breath. This is going to be (or already is) a bucket-list resort. They are having some opening growing pains. To be expected. They are working through them and making things right.

Thanks to advice from this website and all the points blogs I am staying at this resort for 9 days for free (unless I upgrade my room). That would be around $21K. Yes I am not thrilled to pay $370++ RT (I got the discounted fair) X3 people, but it is what it is.

At the risk of getting flamed here, I suggest guests here wait a year and see what others report back on costs. If you like what you hear, book. If not use your points to stay somewhere else for free that has lower “extra” costs.

That at is what I did two years ago when booking a trip to Bora Bora. The Conrad was just re-opening. Did not like the ”unknown” factor so we stayed at Thalasso. This last Summer we stayed at the Conrad and loved it. We will be back. So far the best Hilton Family resort, hands down, we have ever stayed. So the WA has a lot to measure up to. I think they will, or I would not have booked our family summer trip there this year.

Just my .02

I have personally never stayed at a hotel before in it's first week of opening and have my 3 nights booked here for the very first opening weekend. Just curious to know experiences from other folks here how their stays ended up in this kind of situation

Points aren't free.

If you earn them from stays your employer pays for, then their value is what you end up spending elsewhere as a result of using your points here. These points, I personally value at 0.5p each as the hotels we stay at in Europe or the GCC are expensive and we don't have enough points to cover all our stays.

Points earned from credit cards, assuming 2 points per £ (or currency of choice) have to get (at least in the UK) 0.62p per point value for you, as otherwise you could have made that spend on a cashback card and earned more than that in cash.

As such, my base valuation for the 360000 points I used for my upcoming reservation is £1,800.00. Add to this a £1,200.00 ($1,680ish) transfer (arguable, but for new bookings would apply) and my net cost is £3k for 3 nights. It's actually costing me that because I will spend at least that booking other properties this year for cash, when if I wasn't redeeming here I would have used points.

Could I get another 5* resort for that for 3 nights? Yup.

As good as this one? Time will tell. But let's not pretend these stays are free.
