:-: Welcome to the Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi Wiki! :-:
Notes: All prices are in US Dollars and are exclusive of taxes unless specified (by ++)

Tax Information
• 10% Service Charge (levied by resort. For info on this and how it's distributed, see this post)
• 16% T-GST (Tourist Goods & Services Tax, levied by the Maldivian government, current as of Jan 1, 2023). Old 2022 rate was 12%.
• Total tax is 27.2%, not 26% as one would think. Example; $100 + 10% = $110, then add 16% on to $110 for a total of $127.20.
• Tip: To work out prices before the 27.2% taxes, multiply by 0.7862, i.e; 127.2 * 0.7862 = 100
• A Green Tax of $6pp/pn (levied by the Maldivian government) has been introduced starting from 1 November 2015. Points/Redemption bookings are exempt from the tax for up to two guests per room

Booking with points
• Bookings must be cancelled 30 days prior in order to avoid one full night's charge at BAR. (some days cancellation period is 14 days check your reservation details for the exact applicable cancellation policy)
• Website and phone agents state that a cash deposit equivalent to the BAR per night will be taken when booking stays with points. This is an error. NO CASH DEPOSIT IS TAKEN WHEN MAKING A POINTS BOOKING
• Free night certificate: The phone agent states that a cash deposit equivalent to the BAR per night will be taken when booking your free night. This is an error. NO CASH DEPOSIT IS TAKEN WHEN USING YOUR FREE NIGHT CERTIFICATE
This hotel is extremely popular. Rooms are released to be booked with points about 1 year in advance. It seems to be a partially manual process so it's not an exact science. After being released those rooms get booked within a matter of minutes. If you have specific dates you want you need to book them one at a time a year in advance, or risk booking last minute. Yes that makes it hard to use the 5th night free. You can book 5 individual nights and cancel them all to rebook getting the 5th night free, but there's only about a 50% chance the rooms go back into inventory so it's risky. There is no secret, just check Hilton.com all the time. If you don't want to do that, someone else will and they'll get the rooms.

Accommodation:
At opening the resort defined Beach Villas as the lowest category of accommodation (only this category bookable with points). The next highest category was Reef Villas then above that, the Overwater Villas. Note: villas on the Private Island do not count.
This will change in 2020. Quote from the resort "Please be informed that for next year we have changed our villa category. Kindly note that the Reef Villa will be our base category, next will be the Overwater Villa and then the Beach Villa. Basically the Beach Villa will be a higher category compared to reef Villa and Overwater Villa."
See this post for the conversation related to this. Pricing has changed as well to reflect this. See below for 2020 pricing.
Note that as of August 2019 the BV is still available to book on points in 2020. This may change, however.

Grand OWV Suggestion

My wife and I will be staying in a grand OWV this coming February and we’d like to know if these are any suggestions regarding which villas are preferable to others. Our #1 priority is the view. We’d prefer a straight view out to the ocean rather than seeing other villas across the lagoon and would rather avoid seeing the lights from Male at night. With those criteria in mind, I think all of the north facing GOWV’s in the 700’s are out of the question. That leaves villas in the 100’s or the south facing villa’s in the 700’s. I understand that the south facing 700’s villas are located closer to most of the restaurants which is a plus, but I can’t tell from the map what the view is like. Do they look out on to the sea with nothing in site or are other villas visible. It’s pretty obvious the 100’s villas have an unobstructed ocean view, but they are pretty distant from most of the restaurants. Is the distance really that far compared to the 700’s? I am also concerned about being put in a villa very close to Zuma which might be a bit noisier, though it seems most of the GOWV’s in the 100’s aren’t that close to Zuma.

Anyone have any advice? Is there anything I’m not taking into account?

Lost/delayed luggage when arriving at Male

We should be on the WK66 flight yesterday. However the flight is cancelled and we were rerouted to Emirates. And unexceptionally, the baggages were lost/delayed. A claim is already filed with Emirates, but I am not very confident they could get them in a short time. The ticket is a oneway bought using Amex Business Platinum. However as I understand the baggage delay insurance from Amex is only covered $200 pp? At such a hotel where a simple underwear costs 82$, I don't feel it is enough. Does anyone know better ways to handle such cases?

Amex issue cards in many countries, and I assume even in a single country have multiple policies. You should be able to find your own documents/contract/cover hopefully.

maybe the airline will cover something but sadly if you are under insured (not a criticism, it’s not a potential expense I’d ever considered for the Maldives) then you may just need to buy something.

I suggest that going to male and delaying your seaplane, even overnight if needed, and finding clothes there would save $1000s

WA Maldives doesn’t use seaplane transport.

My personal advice would be to tell your personal concierge everything and ask them if the Waldorf has any clothes that can be borrowed or if they can provide laundry service for the clothes that you wore onto the island to be clean. (I wouldn't mention the Amex insurance) However, the airline should cover most expenses but I would have someone confirmation of that before I started buying thing to figure out their limit.

Moreover, it never hurts to ask when a staffer or their coworkers when they are planning on going to the mainland and offering them a cash tip to pick you up some items for you discreetly. I have found on my two stays at this place that the staff will go above and beyond to resolve issues. I am sure your luggage will be delivered a day later, and they will even unpack it if you want. But please let us know any updates that occur because you have encountered my fear, we literally packed 3 days of clothes in our carry-on just incase this happened. So I would love to hear how it gets resolved.

Indeed. I think with the yacht the suggestion is much more applicable because it doesn't really require staying overnight in Male due to the flexibility of the boat compared to the sea planes.

Has anyone been on the SQ flight departing MLE at 2325? What happens on the day of check out? Do you get to stay at the resort for most of the day after check out? Or do you have to pay to stay longer?

We were given an empty room after checkout to stay till 5pm before departing for the airport. We had asked about it before our arrival but they couldn't guarantee anything till the day of.

Requested for a surprise petal bubble bath on a honeymoon stay on HH gold account on a 5 night 600k points stay , concierge says 'Its not in the package' I remember the bubble bath was prepared in a surprise at the St Regis, I did not even request the St Regis back in 2017

I've asked my concierge for a bubble bath when I was there. They did it no problem.

Male is fairly distant. You will see some lights but not a ton. If you value privacy, the north facing 700s are just fine. The south facing 700s are also a decent distance away from anything motorosports related. We'ved stayed in lagoon facing reef and the 700s south. OW is definitely private enough (lost our luggage first day so walked around naked on back deck no issues; not advisable unless you're a thrill seeker with a reef one). You also face the private island which will rarely will be rented.

The only exception would be the south facing OWs that are the furthest out, you would think they are more private but no, because the way the reef shape is, boats can't really come close in until the back. And the furthest out are where the tenders for the Stella Maris villas will come closer in, so if those are occupied, you can expect a little traffic.

South 100s are very private because they are on the right side of the pier. The front side of the villa faces the lagoon but it's nothing that matters (e.g. front door, bathroom which you will keep shaded). The back side faces just ocean. They are also very isolated just like the north facing 100s. They are decently far enough from Zuma. But yes, they are very far from everything else.

Something to add here - the North facing side seems more exposed to the elements. During storms or when the wind is kicking up, it's noticeably stronger on the exposed side. Further, the way the villas are oriented, the pool water in your private pool (at least to us) kept warmer with south facing villas because they caught more sun.

I'm not sure if we were just there when it was particularly clear, or if others don't consider it as big a problem, but I'd only ever stay at this resort again if I could guarantee I wouldn't be in a villa facing Male.

This photo is blurred, but it gives a good idea. That's not moonlight, that's Male light. Photo taken from Zuma looking across the lagoon. It was so bright it blocked out most of the stars on that side of the island.
