Online check in and room upgrade Hilton

So you get the option to check in online prior to any suggested offer upgrade based on for example gold membership for HH

So if you choose your room and check in does this mean you do not get your upgrade if it became available ?

Confused - I shall reach gold very soon so just getting prepared for it

I found this to be an issue in the past as it was better to check in at the hotel for upgrades purposes. Recently however it seems to be improved. You do get a message when you check in via the app that because of your status and if there is availability, you will be upgraded.
And hotels do upgrade. I have been upgraded 4 out of 4 stays recently

There's a lot of threads on this with plenty of differing views. Airlines are first come but when it comes to Hiltons check in my rule is unless it is a hotel that knows you it is best to wait until your room has been upgraded unless you know the hotel will be full and upgrades will be unlikely then choose the best room you can otherwise you may get the worst one left.

It used to be a problem, but in 2017 I nearly always check-in online, usually on the morning of my arrival. 4/5 I see that the "My Stay" section is updated and show the upgraded room. Then the remaining are split between having to pick a room of the same category I booked but nevertheless be upgraded when I arrive or not being upgraded.

I've found that it matters when you do the online check-in. If you try immediately the check-in period opens my experience is you don't get upgraded. Trying much later (like the morning of the day of arrival) often shows me only one room available in the app, an upgrade, which presumably has been pre-allocated by someone at the hotel.

This is exactly my experience. There is almost always a selection of standard rooms if I check-in online when prompted by the app, waiting until the day of arrival always yields a better selection.

Over my last ~20 stays, I have yet to see a room upgrade be offered via online checkin. I have another 3 in three days this weekend. I will hold off checking in and see if anything becomes available, but the only hotel I've seen an upgrade was the LAX airport hilton. Anyone having better luck recently? And where/what types of hotels are you staying at? I know the hampton inn and garden inn's aren't the best, but i'm at a doubletree and hilton this week which both do offer suites.

I see the upgrade offered via OLCI in 80% of my stay, latest being last week-end. I stay in HGI, DT and Hilton in Europe. I always OLCI the morning of arrival, not the day before.

Maybe it's more prominent in Europe then. I was in four different hotels in Houston last week and nothing. Doing chicago this weekend.

According to my experiences, upgrade success rate is 100% outside United States for both Hilton and Marriott even though for Gold members. I myself as a Hilton Diamond member, upgrade is only honored by Waldorf, Conrad, and some Hilton in the United States. As for DoubleTree I have ever stayed with in recent years, they donít honor upgrade any more, especially after online check in and digital key feature was implemented. Whatís worse is Doubletree donít even do room pre assignment any more. You get what you pick at online check in not even to think about upgrade. Several times I did not do online check in to pick my own room, at check in I was put in the ďleftoverĒ rooms. I think Doubletree has become one of those other Hilton profiles that donít offer upgrades such as Hampton Inn and Hilton Garden Inn.... Luxury hotel is the only way to go if you want to feel like a VIP today....

If I wait until the day of check-in I would say about 60-70% have upgraded the reservation and allows for that room choice. If the hotel has a message option you can always select a room and then enquire about an upgrade.

In Canada, even though not required, I regularly get upgrades at Hampton, Doubletree and Hilton Garden Inn. Not much experience in US with these brands but have got upgrades at Hampton.

Well, I opted to not check in the day before like usual for both stays, and both times I was offered upgrades to something other then a high floor. So it seems for now on, I will not check in the day before. Thanks for sharing your experiences.

When I check in online it always says "choose your room now and we'll do our best to upgrade you when you arrive" or something like that.

I've always checked in online to avoid being left with the junk if the hotel is busy. In most cases, in dozens of countries, I've been upgraded at check-in as I expected.

Hilton Sheffield (GBR) on the other hand have never upgraded me. Even when I can see premium rooms available they just say sorry we're full...

Today I found out that their policy is to not upgrade any guest who has checked in online. That is how the staff are trained.

Hilton Sheffield has several other big problems, but this for me is the worst (worse than breakfast not starting until 7am, the smell in the rooms, the noisy service elevator, the slamming doors, the unfriendly staff, the feeble showers, the dirty carpets, the aging bathrooms, the lack of privacy curtains in rooms overlooked by office blocks...)

Their policy that you are not eligible for upgrades if you check in online contradicts what you are very clearly told when you check in online. It means that you have to choose between the possibility of an upgrade where available on arrival, or having a little certainty that you won't be left with a room next to the elevator or overlooking the smokers who congregate outside the bar.
