Hilton Midtown NYC is now charging a $25 extra fee for wifi/phone/food credit

I was in the process of booking a room at the Midtown Hilton NYC in January since it's next to a conference I'm attending to be greeted with this message:
Daily Mandatory Charge will be added to the room rate and includes: Urban Destination Charge with premium guest internet access (3 devices); $15 beverage credit in Lobby Lounge or Bridges Bar; $10 food credit in Herb N' Kitchen (grab and go only); local and toll-free calls.

It's $25 a day. I called the hotel and they won't waive it for diamonds. I never use the hotel phone and get free wifi as a diamond anyway and have no need for the food and beverage credit. The hotel told me the credit for food and beverage is per stay not per day. I'm going to book at either a Hyatt property or the Hilton Times square that isn't charging this yet. It's bad enough they won't give a late check out to diamonds and charge to store bags but now this????? I hope this isn't a sign of what they are planning on doing in other NYC properties.

If all the hotels start charging this I'm going to start booking each day of the stay as a different reservation to get the food and beverage credit every day.

To call a spade a spade that is complete and utter (insert expletive here).
A 'resort fee' (which is bad enough) when you are not even a resort.

What a sad joke this is. Hilton should be absolutely ashamed. And on top of that, the hotel doesn't even have coffee makers in the room!! If I was the competition, I would literally use that garbage fee in advertisements to take bookings away from them with a message that we won't shamelessly nickel and dime you. I definitely won't return here.

The resort fee strikes again, and no way is this Hilton in NYC a resort of any sort.

Well there is another reason to not stay at a Hilton.

The two Westins in downtown San Diego do this . . . they call it a "Facility Fee." I won't stay at a property that does this.

The disease is spreading in NYC. IIRC, the Parker Meridien started this a few years ago, and I recently noticed it in the Lexington hotel (Marriott) and the W Times Square as well. I will go out of my way to avoid these hotels.

Not surprising coming from this property. They have a long and checkered history of putting profit before customer service. For years they would give Priceline customers the absolute worst rooms, and then sneer at them when people complained. Unfriendly staff. It's places like this that give New York a bad name with tourists.

But you're right--lots of big hotels are going this route. The Hilton Anatole in Dallas is now charging a $25 resort fee, which includes internet, parking, and health club use. The difference is, the Anatole actually IS a resort, even though it's in the middle of the city.

Yes they do and the items included in the fee are already benefits you would get as a SPG member. No guarantee but the last two times I've stayed at the Downtown SD Westin, the fee was not charged but it is clearly advertised on SPG that it will be.
