Since the hotel gets paid like any other stay, I can see where guests think elite benefits should apply. When I book airline tickets through the similar Citi portal, my AA miles, status, upgrade priority, etc. are not impacted.

But clearly Hilton *doesn't* do this, which means Don is probably better off redeeming Marriott stays out of the Chase portal.
We have another stay with Hilton booked from the UR portal next week....will report back on how it goes. As usual, we have advised them in advance via direct contact of our status.

My wife was a global traveler in her profession for 40 years, and has gold/plat/lifetime status with many travel entities.
On the other hand, I'll bet your guests didn't book your hotel with Hotwire/Priceline/Expedia, and weren't shopping over the Internet for opaque or non-opaque inventory at the lowest price in a particular star level and general geographical location thirty years ago. Times change. Booking engines aren't listing hotel rooms for free for hotels; that's money that comes out of their profit for a hotel. Thus hotels want to incentivize you to book without using the third party booking engine, but the contracts with booking engine companies say "you can't offer a lower price to the public than ours, it has to be the same or higher". Thus many hotel chains offer "elite program member only" prices as well as require you to book through the hotel chain to get elite benefits.

I guess you should stick to Marriott if you want to use the Chase portal and get your benefits. That is, unless they change their minds someday...

I'll also add that any big hotel in any major city knows who its own frequent guests are and how much they yield. Who books confirmed suites, who books meetings with catering, who brings a lot of other guests to the hotel for those events, etc. They may not carry a separate "Preferential Card" today, but the hotel knows who they are and can distinguish them from the random Joe who got status through CC spend or a few well-planned mattress runs.

Absolutely agree! When my spouse was a “top ten” Plat guest of a particular Marriott, she stored a suitcase there plus she had her own hotel supplied coffee pot, hair dryer, etc. It’s all about relationship.

Oh poppycock! Back in the golden days, Don Draper here just scraped the carrier pigeon doo-doo off of the lowest handwritten Priceline bid that came in the window, and then personally escorted his esteemed guests into the smoking lounge for cocktails.

The loyalty is a two way street. The loyal customer has to rub the hotel's back by booking via the Hotel chain's website (so the hotel does not have to pay third party booking fees).

If the "loyal" customer goes and books via a third party website, this is not the behavior the Hotel chain desires, so the customer is denied "benefits."

I too have gotten my Gold benefits on Priceline bookings, and I have been denied those benefits. I expect nothing. I have traded the Gold benefits for the discount on the Priceline.com Opaque room price.

You got the important one and I'd be happy enough about that. It isn't like Golds get good upgrades, maybe a courtyard instead of a street window?

Why not? I did that for an upcoming SPG stay that was via DeltaVacations (so a package rate). I can now see the reservation in my account, no idea if they'll honor my SPG Gold status or not.

It may have to do with the rate paid, rather than the 3rd party sites.

Regardless - when you redeem award, don't expect anything other than what you have booked.

Erm ... because (since we all know that gold with Hilton is not really anything special -- i.e., not even the top tier!) it makes you look like a DYKWIA.

Im diamond and have been for at least 10 years(all from stays, not credit card).....I rarely get upgrades and often am in very plain rooms--For me, the perk of being diamond is the extra points I earn on stays.
I do think its a joke that at homewood suites I can get water or 250 pts, lol but the program works for me and I never expect much and you sound very unrealistic!!

Look on the bright side: at the Marriott equivalent (Residence Inn), you only earn half the points.

Homewood's always been on of the HH brands I like...only brand that regularly has bookable 2-bedroom suites...but I've noticed the soft product (things like the evening reception) have gotten very barebones/cheap. Oh well, I just tell myself I'm there for the ability to comfortably have the whole family in one suite and HH isn't penalizing me 50% of the base points for doing so.

I almost always stay at hamptons and only will do a hgi or homewood if price is lower (travel budget). True, though, the extras have gotten a bit bare boned, I stayed at homewood 2 nites this week and the breakfast was not at all as good as what the hampton inn offers. I just dont really have any complaints about the program, as long as I get my lobby coffee im happy (thats actually why I left Marriot,lol--its the little things for some of us
