Internet Code vs Room Login

Noticed an uptick in properties which provide Internet Codes (typically written on my keycard holder) . Is there an incentive for the hotel to do so ?

As Diamond , it's hit and miss for me that the code provides Premium Internet speeds.

I don't know if they have an incentive but I certainly prefer the code. I'm not keen on entering my Hilton login info on unsecured wifi. If they don't have a code I just go with the free option which doesn't require my Hilton account info.

The Diamond codes I've gotten recently have gotten me Premium internet. Although I recognize that's a small sample.

Hilton San Diego Mission Valley right now:

Speed with the code that front desk asked me to use: 3Mb / 2Mb
Speen when logging in with my Diamond credentials: 10Mb / 8Mb

I have similar experience from other Hilton hotels.

doesn't the free internet also require Room# & Last Name ?

Concur with your experience.

At some older properties the "Premium Internet" still has a list price, and if it's my 1st stay I tend to check with Reception if the charge will indeed be waived for Diamond (always yes ... but sometimes not automatically).

Whenever I log in, It only gives the standard internet which is usually slow. I sometimes see the premium option to purchase, but never get that option available when logging in.

95% of the time I just use my jetpack since it's much faster.

I've never had the option of logging in with my Diamond credentials.

For me, it is room number and last name, or a code offered by the front desk.

Yes but a hacker could do a lot more damage with my HH # and password than they can with my last name and room # at one hotel. No comparison.

I ask for the code every time and am often successful at getting it.

I always get the option to log in with HHONORS number, name an room number. Then it picks up the Diamond status and gives me the highest speed.

i have not seen such login screen before. Maybe I don't travel enough. Could you take a screen shot please? Just curious.

I was once given a premium internet code without being a Diamond - it was back in May 2015 at a Hampton Inn. The card simply said something about being an HHonors member and nothing about having status. I guess it was something just that one hotel did.

Really? I get that on every stay, no exceptions.
Sorry I can't take a screen shot now since I'm already logged in. And this is the last night on this trip.

It's over HTTPS so risks are incredibly minimal.

This is becoming really weird. I am with those folk who have never seen such an option before. For me it's always simply the access code or name and room number. Maybe I'm not looking in the right place, but I don't think so? I'd also be keen to see a screen shot if anybody else can manage it when they get a chance.

My stays are generally Western Europe/UK and South East Asian properties if that makes a difference.

I always see unsecured connection when I try to connect via wifi so how can you tell that the connection when you log in is encrypted? Also I've heard tales of HH account info being stolen over the wifi, confirmed once last year by a front desk agent who said that the wired connection was safer.
