The Ridgevale Bar and Kitchen, housed in the Hampton by Hilton Hotel on Argyllgait, stopped serving on Wednesday.

The restaurant, which is a separate business from the hotel, had been taken over less than a year ago.

That’s a shame as it wasn’t too bad and was reasonably priced.

It did seem a bit a bit of a strange place to put a restaurant though imo and there wasn’t a lot of signage for it. The population of the area is predominantly students and there is a decent restaurant in the casino opposite whilst both Innis & Gunn and Avery & Co nearby are good for food.

On the hotel side side of things I’ve noticed that the average nightly rate has dropped about £20 a night since the Premier Inn on the waterfront reopened.

I know the V&A is coming to town but I think with a Hotel Indigo and a Staybridge both on the horizon for later this year Dundee could reach saturation point.

Overdue a trip to Dundee, the last time I stayed there was in the old Hilton!

liking the sound of the Staybridge and the Indigo!

Quick update from last weekend.

Parking is now GBP 6 for 24 hours , if you can find a space. There were about 3 of 25 available at 4PM on a Sunday (when the public car parks are free - so I assume hotel guests). Some pretty sloppy parking going on though!

The welcome tray seems to have been done away with, or maybe they thought I needed to lose weight. . I asked at reception for water and was told to help myself from the pantry (cold shelves in front of the bar area). I'm not sure if you need to be invited and may get rugby tackled if you help yourself.

Room was xx07 I think - end of the corridor away from the lift. Spacious room with a large window overlooking the roundabout in front of the hotel. Nothing much of note. Tea/Coffee making facilities in the room, toiletries dispensers bolted to the wall as is the coming trend apparently. No bath in this room but a shower stall that was 3/4 enclosed. Anyway, everything was still clean and new.

All in all a pretty decent hotel. Especially for 17K points,

I’ve not had anything in the room this year that I can recall (4 or 5 visits) so it’s definitely gone by the look of things.

The car car park is awful and some of the spaces are tight. Normally I park across the road in the council car park at South Tay Street, chargeable 8-6 Monday to Saturday and 1-6 on a Sunday (not sure when they started charging on a Sunday, that’s defintiely new). You get two hours for £2.30 and three hours for £4. So for the £4 you could arrive at 4pm and leave at 9am the following morning and it can be paid using the RingGo app so you get an invoice emailed which is handy for expenses.

This is still my preferred Hilton in Dundee, as previously mentioned I’m not keen on the DT even though the location is better for me.

It will be interesting to see what happens with the rates when the V&A opens whilst there are still a couple of new IHG hotels to open as well. The V&A will attract people but whether they stay over is another question.

I had a two-night stay at this property this week. I was very impressed with the hotel: clean, friendly staff, nice status recognition. As far as food goes, the breakfast is great, with lots of hot and cold choices and there was even haggis (which I really enjoy). They have small bites all day and a slightly larger variety of food in the evening (between 5-10). Most impressive is the 24 hour bar, but I was surprised that the selection of Scotch whiskey was poor despite being in Scotland! I was told that this was a corporate thing, not a local choice.

The property is a 5 minute walk from the University where I needed to be, so it was incredibly convenient. I look forward to going back again soon!

Hmm I think they could be fibbing about the Scotch. This hotel is managed by Interstate who also manage Hampton Aberdeen Airport and they have a fairly impressive range of Scotch.

It's a decent property though and I prefer it to the DT.

Hmmm is right! They had a very sparse shelf of scotch whiskey last week. I will have to challenge them when I go back!! Thanks for the response!

The Friendliest Stay

This was my first Hilton stay post Covid-19 lockdown and the first time in the Hampton Dundee having previously always stayed at the now closed Doubletree. What a superb hotel! In my 24 years of Hilton loyalty membership I have never encountered such friendly staff at check-in and serving in the kitchen at breakfast. I truly felt like a guest.

There wasn't much as a Diamond apart from two bottles of sparkling water. This was fine as I had already allocated myself an 04 room which I think are the largest. For the Beano fans out there all of the 04 rooms overlook Bash St. The breakfast was extremely fresh and as I said the lady serving me was a delight!

The hotel was spotlessly clean and I felt very safe. My new go to hotel in Dundee!

2 night Bank Holiday Stay

Hi,

For my first trip since lockdown ended I decided to go to Dundee and booked the Hampton for 6 nights for a combined stay/mattress run). Rate was around £80per night for 2x points.Booked 2 twin beds and used online check in and chose Rm 511 (top floor ) facing the casino and Bash Street ( I was considering Edinburgh but the WA was over £300per night and the Carlton over £200pn.

I walked ( up hill) from the train station in around 10 mins ( I would allow 15 mins as there are a number of streets to cross.)

One of the Overgate carparks ( connected to the ex-Debenhams store ) on West marketgait looked fully closed on all three days I was there.
I was able to go to my room at 1pm and chose my diamond amenity of a bottle of Irn Bru and a chocolate Aero bar ( crisps & m&Ms also available). Also 2 bottles of water were provided.
Covid precautions are in effect ie
Masks in public spaces
Limited lift capacity
Housekeeping on request only ( extra items such as coffee /sugar available from reception.). Did not need extra towels or toilet paper for my 2 nights but the trash can was getting full - if staying for more than 2 nights, I would ask reception for towels etc.
Table service at the bar
Booking time slot at the gym
Booking time for breakfast,

The rooms were very clean and well maintained ( looked very new ) with good blackout curtains and a good tv.
Bathroom was fine, clean and new with a shower only and walll mounted shampoo, body wash ,hand soap, body lotion and conditoner.
A/C was good.
Little outside noise ( worst was a few cars revving up at midnight on saturday but it only lasted a few minutes)

Breakfast was assisted buffet. You helped yourself to juice & coffee, cereal, fruit and yoghurt with hot items and bread or crossiant being served to you ( hot items were porridge, haggis, bacon, sausage, scrambled eggs and beans)

Dinner was very good and reasonbly priced ( ie lasagne , chicken tika massala for c £12, sticky toffee pudding for £5) and very fresh. Service was very good also.

Today ( BH Monday) the hotel was busier and waited a turn to use the elevators but apart from that did not have issues with elevator capacity ( once I walked down from floor 5 to try it out)

The gym was small ( 2 treadmills 1 of which is taped off for social distancing, 1 elliptial, 1 bike , weight machine, loose weights balls, and mats ( no water cups). You can book in 45min slots ( extra time for cleaning between users) but I was the only one in the gym both nights. I then went for a short jog down to the V&A and Discovery water front.

Lots of social distancing signs on the floors, hand sanitising stations and wipes.

Overall a very good hotel stay.

Lidl ( just outside the hotel) and Tesco express ( across the road in the service appartment/G casino comples) still there and open.

Rooms and hotel spaces still spotlessly clean.

Will post a few pictures when I have downloaded them.

Weather was foggy and cool ( I climbed Dundee law ( 174 m on) sunday and to the north and west was brilliant sunshine but to the east by the city centre and the tay was foggy. It looked a bit erie seeing the Tay bridge disappear into the mist and the legs of the oil rigs docked rising out of the fog and slowly become enveloped by taller fog banks.

Regards

Thanks for sharing your report TBS. Somewhat off topic, but related to Dundee.. would you recommend it as a day trip/afternoon out location from Edinburgh? Going to be there next month and my OH would like to visit somewhere.. the more scenic the better, but not sure Dundee entirely qualifies!

Hi,

As detailed above, some photos from my stay this weekend ( Room 511 -top floor)

Welcome amenity for HH Diamond Soft Drink and a snack plus 2 bottles of water

Tea & Coffee ( Kettle is just to the right out of view) underneath the tv

Room 511- Two twins- tv and small desk to the right. Small safe and two small drawers in centre console- plenty of sockets by bed side ( USB ports too) plus more by tv. Odd place for luggage rack- you would need to lift your case over the bed-did not use it for my carry on only.

WC ( Shower towel and hand towel stored in cabinet on left)

Sink & towel rail with shower. Wall mounted soap etc

Wall mounted dispensers. As with the room, everything was spotless. Bathroom was well lit.

View from Rm 511 . Top 2 floors are services appartments. Saw a woman looking out of the window on the penultimate floor once so not sure if you can be seen from the apartments if the sheer is not draw, Casino on the ground. Bash Stret is the lane to the right.

Dinner in Hotel Bar/ Restaurant. Lasagne with garlic bread ( very soft). Chips extra £3 but very fresh also.

Hot breakfast ( could have had haggis also and more sausages). You ask the assisted buffet server at the counter for items. OJ & Coffee are self service ( incl caffe latte). Coffee was good.

Cold item selection. Also had pears and apples as fruit, also coco pops and weetabix and 1 other cereal choice, choice of yoghurt. Taken from low angle to avoid taking pictures of other guests

Desperate Dan statue ( could do with a bit of a clean) Caird hall to the right ( being used as a Covid vaccination centre).

Sticky toffee pudding for dessert with ice cream

Taken from top of Dundee Law ( 174m ) about 2 miles from waterfront with the fog rolling in . RRS Discovery and Tay Road bridge hidden. Towers of jack-up rigs docked on water front rising out of the fog.

Is that a submarine conning tower? No just a rock feature with the Tay Road bridge fading into the mist. ( and at time it was a lot thicker). At high tide you could just see the rectangular rock sticking above the water.

This looks like fun- lots of people were on it the previous afternoon. It is like an inflatable assault course ( Wild shore dundee) also wakeboarding is provided but saw no one do the jumps. Wetsuits and lifejackets provided. The 19th Century frigate HMS Unicorn ( unmasted and roofed) is above it . Well worth a visit

Hi,

It would be worthwhile for a Day trip at least ( you need to prebook a timeslot to visit the V&A ( free of charge) with an extra charge for special exhibitions. The RRS Discovery which took Scott & Shackleton to the antarctic amongst other expeditions ( next door to the V&A )and its exhibitions are very impressive as is the HMS Unicorn nearby. Nice views across the tay on a nice day ( and you can walk/cycle across the bridge
Dundee Law ( 174m ) offers nice views but can take a little while to get up and back down ( good work out). The city centre does have a lot of nice buildings , museums and an old cemetary (founded by Mary, Queen of scots i think i saw on its sign) The Civic quay is nice ( the Unicorn and the water assult course) but a number of shops there have closed.
Various beaches are near by ( this was my first visit to dundee). St andrews might be better, Stirling has a castle and the wallace monument and there is North Berwick also with its costal scenery.

Regards

Very pleasant stay here with a colleague in August. We were allocated rooms at the end/corner of the building which ended up being much larger than the average room (looking at the fire plan and the app floor plan) and had floor to ceiling windows across two whole walls which was nice. These rooms are not bookable on their own but seem to be allocated to status members from what the staff said. Much appreciated. As there is only one such room on each floor, my colleague and I were of different floors. Her view from the 5th floor stretched all the way down the hill to the river whereas mine on the 2nd floor had a great view of Lidl and the shopping centre car park. I was grateful for the natural light regardless as I ended up having to work in the room for a few hours.

Also worth noting that there was no specific welcome gift - we were each allowed to pick any snack and drink that was being sold at reception (they have a mini-shop like many Hamptons). I quite like this as it meant we got a snack and beverage that we actually really wanted.
