What's better: $438 or 113,583 points?

I had a four night award reservation at a Hampton Inn, at a cost of 20,000 points per night.

I just changed it to a "Get double points" reservation. The question is am I better off having $438 in my pocket or 113,583 more points in my HHonors account?

The room rate is $96.12 per night, before taxes. That comes to 3844 base points.

I get a 50% My Way bonus and a 50% Diamond bonus = together, 3844 points.

The double points offer gives me another 3844 points.

The 4th Quarter bonus will come to 11532 points.

The full price, with tax, is 438.31, which I will pay with my Surpass card and get 5260 points.

Of course, I was refunded the 80,000 points for my award stay.

In total, that comes to 113,583 points. With the latest devaluations, is it better to have the money or the points?

Seems like an easy decision to take the points.

It depends how you use them and how you're building them up, but I try to get a redemption value of 1c/point.

As this is less than 0.5c/point, I'd take the points and would buy the stay with cash.

However, if I earned all my points through my employer and only did limited leisure travel, I'd value each point much lower.

Of course, if you could find another nearby Hampton where the redemption rate was lower, and particularly if you could add a fifth night to the stay (which would then be free on points) a redemption would make much more sense.

Incidentally, even at 1c/point redemption, I find it rarely makes sense to go for the double points offers. I suspect they're aimed at people who don't have to choose the lowest possible rate when expensing it. MVP, Little League, AAA or gold medal rate would mean that the effective price of those double points is very high even if not too bad against the flex rate.

Also makes sense if you are going to have a lot of incidentals (not likely at a HI).

Incidentals don't earn HHonors points at Hamptons (or Homewoods).

I would say any hotel room under $120 a night should be paid in cash (if you wallet can handle it)

A $99 room rate isn't worth the 20,000 points

I say keep the points, but barely. I'm happy with anything better than half a cent a point, which you weren't getting, so use the cash. I don't usually figure in all the lost points for not paying, but that's a better way.

I value the points at .4 cents each, so it would be a about a wash for me. I guess I would pay and get the points since I am point poor after using them all up at the last devaluation.

Pay 80k or receive 113k? Sounds like the answer is in the question. Just say you would make a similar stay a week later and use the 113k you earned to pay the bill of 80k. You pocket 33k and have the stay. Start of a business enterprise.

+1. I value HHonors points at just under .4 cents so it is a toss-up.

A good redemption is .6 cents. A very good redemption would be 1 cent. At less than .4 cents, this is not a good redemption. Pay cash.

Also, don't you get 6 extra bonus points on Surpass right now?

Is that a targeted offer? If not, where do I find it and sign up for it?
