Advice for an upgrade

Hey everyone,

I have a room booked at the Hampton in in NYC next weekend.. I am a hilton gold member.

Does anyone have any advice to get my room upgraded? I called the hotel and they put me on the "24 hour list".

It's my birthday, so I was hoping to get one of their nicer rooms :p

There should have been options in the confirmation email to use points or a small fee to guarantee an upgrade.

If there is a certain room type you really want at a Hampton, I would book it and not depend on upgrade. Upgrades are not a benefit at Hamptons for either gold's or diamonds.

That isn't to say it won't happen. I have gotten suites at Hampton Inn and Suites and HGI's before even though it isn't a benefit, it just depends on the property.

Unless it's a suite, I really don't see much difference in room types at most Hamptons anyway.

NYC properties see more Diamonds than just about any other market - hundreds a day at the W=A and others. Gold is virtually meaningless, so book the room you want.

Will Hamptons in NYC upgrade diamonds? I have been upgraded before at the HGI in times square.

Diamond can be meaningless in NYC as well on prime weekends.

Depends on whether there's any type of upgrade available. My go-to NYC property is the DT TS, and I've always found that property to be very good about upgrades.

No, I did get upgrade to a bigger weird shape corner room in W=A as a gold.

You must have never stayed at the DT during New Years<EG>. Outside of NYE the DT has been good about upgrading me as well as the HGI on 8th (even though upgrades aren't technically a benefit).

I was curious about upgrades the Hampton Inn on 8th and I believe 50th by the HGI (not sure if this is the HI the OP is talking about or not). Normally the HGI on 8th and the HI are pretty close in prices but for my stay coming up in early June the HI was quite a bit cheaper and unless rates come down elsewhere I will be staying there and was just wondering if they upgraded diamonds or not.

At the TS DT I expect an upgrade if it's available seeing upgrades are a DT benefit. They aren't a benefit at HI or HGI's, but the HGI still upgrades me.

If I don't get upgraded I can't complain since it's not a benefit I am to receive, but it would still be nice.

This following is just my opinion from personal experience and adjusting accordingly to have less stressful/more enjoyable travel. I don’t think you should ever rely on getting an upgrade when you are booking a room. By that I mean if not being upgraded to a certain level is going to materially negatively impact your stay (i.e. its a special occasion and you want to enjoy it with an upgraded room), you really should book the minimum that will make it a special stay/fit your expectations. There are some places where I definitely want a suite or a room on the executive floor and while I am entitled to one, there is the caveat “if available” and you make a calculated risk that such category “is available” when you arrive. The hotel might look like there is oodles of availability when you book but things can change dramatically, especially if they are trying aggressively to book (as most hotels do). I realize the comments above are stating the obvious, but its something to remember, especially if you are relatively new to Gold/Diamond status and have overly optimistic expectations.

Agree. You should never depend on an upgrade.

If someone really wants a suite upgrade, book a suite. If someone really wants to fly in First Class, buy F and don't depend on an upgrade
