I stayed there last week and overall it's nice as ES go.

All suite property but as a Diamond was upgraded to an executive suite with a large conference table/work area.

There is a Ruth's Chris in the lobby, very good but expensive. The fitness center and indoor pool lookd nice but didn't use them.

Breakfast was good but get there early as seating is limited in the atrium.

Enjoy!

I just booked this property.

Says on their website:

We provide spacious two room suites, cooked-to-order breakfast and an evening reception with your favorite beverages ....

Will be coming off 24 hours on planes SYD-SFO-ORD-BHM, so am interested to hear what the deal is with the last past of the statement above. about beverages. Is this set for certain hours does anyone know?

Any idea if they haven airport transfer van, as we will not pick up rental til the next day.

And seeing we will not have a car is there anything much to see shopping and restaurant wise within walking distance?

I have stayed at this property and actually live in the neighborhood. The hotel is nice but alwasy seems to be crowded. The reception is in the evenings from 6-8 I believe and they offer beer, wine and some cocktails for registered guests.

I believe they have an airport shuttle but you may have to call and reserve for odd arrival times.

The hotel is within 10 minutes walking distance of downtown Homewood. There may not be a good way to get there by foot but I am sure that the shuttle will drop you off. There are 4-5 restaurants and a couple of bars to choose from.

Good Luck with your stay there.

Firstly - welcome to FT BHAMFlyer. I guess if there was ever a thread to take your eye it would be this one.

And thanks for info. OK, so about 6-8 some gratis adult refreshments .. sounds like our kind of place. ^ ^

We are staying middish November, so if you are about then, maybe we can have the first ever FT Mini Doo in BHM?

We are just going to rent a car for a short vacation and wander slowly up to Memphis, and then down thru New Orleans, Mobile and then back to BHK in a week or so. On side roads as much as possible when outside larger cities.

As a "local" where might you suggest we spend a day or so to get to see some real untouched Mississippi or Alabama - like old wooden houses, and countryside largely free of development?

Just so you know... The itinerary above is a decent bit of driving. If you only have a week and would like to take your time wandering, you might want to limit your destinations or use Southwest for the New Orleans portion.

No worries there.... There is quite a bit of rural Alabama and Mississippi along US78 on the way from BHM to Memphis. Skip the Moon Pies but enjoy the Sun Drop.

If I may jump in here, I'd be in favor of attending a do in the Ham, provided I'm in town.

Can't offer many suggestions on untouched deepsouth locations since I've only been here a couple years. Have you seen the film, "Big Fish"? It was filmed locally and you might want to find some of the locations where it was shot. Beautiful "untouched" Alabama.

On a half serious note, you might check out the Alabama coast. It's hardly untouched, but Hurricane Ivan created some open space where empty lots had been filling in rapidly until his arrival. More seriously, it's probably best to avoid travelling east of Mobile as the recovery on the coast will take some time.

You are exactly right about this thread catching my eye. I have been lurking for 3 months and finally took the plunge this morning.

I am interested in a meet as well if I am around during your stay. I will see what I can come up with as far as some things to see during your roam around the South.

If you are going from Birmingham to Memphis I would suggest a side trip to Oxford Mississippi. It is the perfect, small southern town.(I guess I am partial because I spend so much time there!!) It is the home of William Faulkner and Rowan Oak, great restaurants, art galleries, bookstores, and the University of Mississippi. You just take highway 78 from B'ham to Memphis and exit Highway 7 south. It is about 30 miles off of highway 78. Please feel free to PM me with any questions or recommendations. It is definitely a good place to spend the night and have an outstanding meal. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Count me in too for a meet in BHM.

One experience to remember would be a Southern college football tailgate party.

Ole Miss (in Oxford) has some of the best tailgating around, but unfortunately they don't have a home game in November until the 27th. LSU, on the other hand, is home on the 13th and 20th. It's a slightly different atmosphere than at Ole Miss, but a lot of the LSU fans' rowdiness is just for show. They'd just as soon share their beer and jambalaya with you.

Alabama (Tuscaloosa) is home on the 6th and 20th. The 20th is the uber-rivalry game with Auburn, and will feature my presence.

You don't have to go to the game (or even care about the game) to have a good time at a tailgate party.

Well after 4 years on FT I never cease to be amazed at where FT'ers live, and where you may make contact. ^

A thread about a specific Embassy Suites and all these folks living in and around the area pop up.

We arrive into BHM at about 4pm Wednesday Nov 10, so I guess we will not get to see a football game Kubla which is a shame. Have no idea what "tailgating" is?

Eli's_Army - thanks for the suggestion of Oxford. I see it is about 30 miles down #30 from US#78. We'll add that to the route - great info as we have no clue whatever where is the best places to see.

Have never seen the "Big Fish" movie BamaVol so will check that one out for sure if it was ever released here on DVD. Anyone know what part of Alabama they shot it in? I found a review HERE. Sounds most unlike my kind of movie, but if the scenery is a good guide I'll take your word.

RightD - sounds like good info. We may cut down our planned circle! We just looked at a Rand McNally, drew a big circle and said lets do this in a week. So US#78 is pretty scenic? We ideally want to keep right away from bigger interstates and stick to side roads. And please excuse a dumb ozzie question - what are Moon Pies and Sun Drops?

OK, well if a few folks are around BHM Nov 10th maybe we can get together for a free drink courtesy Hilton Embassy Suites (no idea how tightly they police participants on that one- any guidance as to whether a couple of "guests" might be ok?) soon after 6pm, and head out for a bite to eat later?

"Big Fish" was filmed in Wetumpka, which is around 10 miles from Montgomery. (I live in Montgomery). Also, if you are interested in Civil Rights, check the sites in Birmingham, Montgomery, and Selma. Selma also has alot of antebellum homes. Montgomery is around 2 hours south of Birmingham and Selma is 45 mins. to an hour west of Montgomery.

Hope I have helped some....Also there is an Embassy Suites in Montgomery.

Help me out here, there is a highway that goes from Memphis to Jackson MS if OZ stamps were going in the direction of MEM to New Orleans, I have driven it with my salesmen, beautiful, lots of southern culture and such.
(I looked it up, Natchez Trace Parkway) http://usparks.about.com/gi/dynamic/...w.nps.gov/natr

And for the record, the way Bama played last night against, save your money. I do like the idea of a tailgate party though.

While you are at the ES, there will be a huge Iron Statue behind you, there is a very nice park up there on top of red mountain. http://www.bham.net/vulcan/

I met my wife about five miles from there.

Good Pub nearby? Try the "Irish Deli" and get a chilidog with your beer. Yumm Yumm

I don't routinely stay in ES; however, in certain locations like Montgomery, ES is the most convenient (and almost only decent choice around).

The ES in Birmingham and Montgomery are the standard run of the mill ES. Nothing great, nothing awful. Although, I did get an upgrade to the presidential suite in Montgomery one time. It was a nice treat. Generally, if you get an upgrade there, you'll wind up with a conference room in your living room.
