I was able to book two free nights at the Hilton New York for this coming weekend and I did it just two weeks ago!

Yeah the other option would be the Hilton NY, but I really prefer the property at Times Square. I have been milking the reservations system to no avail.

Maple,
Since I posted in the first thread I guess I will post again. If special is the priority, then don't even think about staying at the NY Hilton. I just read an article on the 8 new Luxury hotels in New York in the latest Expedia Travels. The 8 were, the new W Union Square, 60 Thompson in Soho, Dylan Hotel near Grand Central, the Hudson, Chambers, The Muse, The Bryant Park, and the Lbrary Hotel. All sound fantastic except for the Hudson. No points except for the W but they are all hip, boutique, and romantic. The Bryant Park Hotel sounds like they have great views from the 26 story American Radiator Building. Hope this helps.

Just returned from a spontaneous midweek trip to NYC at the Hilton times Square.
I booked a room first looking at the the Hilton website and then calling the hotel directly. We were 2 adults and 2 children,(GOLD). We were upgraded to a corner suite on the 44th floor, and a rollaway was brought so the kids did not have to share. There was bottled water in the rooms and 4 breakfast coupons were included with our keys. The staff was friendly, not fawning, and the evening turn down staff were very kind and unobtrusive, despite the fact that 4 of us were having dinner in the suite at the time. Since we planned on sending the kids to the theater, I cannot think of a better place to stay- even 8th avenue sported a Ben and Jerrys and starbucks and only 1or 2 obvious peep show clubs of yore. The streets are bustling, of course, with a mixture of NYPD and tourists- definitely an exciting place. Hotel security is appropriately tight. We ordered food to be delivered from an offsite restaurant and the security officer called to ask if we were expecting a delivery and then he accompanied the delivery man to our suite and waited and escorted him from the hotel. The view from the suite was NY magical- the rooms were clean, robes were provided, towels huge- huge TV in the living room- there was a VCR and the Hotel guide indicated a video library, but when the kids inquired they were told to go to Blockbuster. also no ice machine on the all Suites floor- the front desk did not know why- there was a sign in the hallway with an arrow pointing to an empty space. Breakfast, at 10:30 AM, on Thursday was quiet and excellent-Others have complained about the service, but we found it to be fine and the food was excellent- great smoked salmon, in a very generous serving, great organic fruit and granola, terrific hash browns and organic eggs and fresh juice- all served in a modern elegant space overlooking Manhattan. I would repeat a stay here. And if one is driving to NY and uses the Lincoln Tunnel, the hotel is right there- no hassle of driving across town- which can add too much time to a trip and of course, if you were to arrive by bus, the Port Authority is across the street.

I just had another pleasant experience at the TS Hilton. Staff was friendly and hospitable.

Antother FYI ... if you plan a stay in Manhattan then need to drive out of town, there is a National Rental Car office just across the street on 41st. If you have time, it is less expensive to take a $11 bus ride to EWR from Port Authority and rent from there.

Thanks for the great news! I have booked a three day award stay in April to see The Producers and Lion King. (I hope to extend the trip to six days - maybe some more space will open up at the hotel for points stays.)

Anyone with pertinent advice to make my trip better, please feel free to email me directly!

Hilton Times Sq as Diamond in Jan

Merry Christmas to All !

I've just booked online at the Hilton Times Square for Fri 18th Jan for 2 nights as Diamond ($179 per night). My colleague who will share the room is also Diamond HH.
1. What can we expect in the way of any upgrade - any recent experiences here ?
2. I put the HH number in the comments section, together with an upgrade request - does anyone have any other contact details (GM email?) that might be of help ?

Thanks in advance for your help.

JP.

As a Gold, I have been able to get upgraded to a suite several times. I stayed there about a dozen times last year, and was upgraded for 9 out of 12.

In my expereince, best thing to do is call the front desk manager on the morning before check-in with your request. This is when they preassign rooms. An advance request won't do good, as the front desk crew rarely see those notes in the computer.

As a Diamond, you may get the upgrade automatically -- but it can't hurt to call.

Just noticed that you are traveling with a colleague. Depending on your relationship, you may not want a suite. To my knowledge, all suites have King beds. The living section has a couch pull-out bed. If you request a suite, be specific about your bed needs.

Thanks for the info, ontheroad !

Yes - we would like a 2-bedded room, so I may ask if they have any 2 bed suites.
Did you mean to call on the morning of check-in (Fri) or the day before ?

Thanks again.

In my experience, best to call on the morning of check-in. If you check in Friday p.m., call Friday a.m.

Some other thoughts:
- If there are no 2-bed suites (or none available), request that your room be on an HHonors floor. Those rooms often have a couple extra amenities and are on higher floors, e.g. better views.

The hotel is in a 44 story building. The hotel lobby is on 23.

- If you are playing a bit of tourist, the rooms facing the south have a good view of south Manhattan. The rooms facing north show part of Times Square and maybe the Hudson River.

- No Executive Lounge or spa there. There is a fitness room.

- Golds & Diamonds get a coupon for free Contiental breakfast, or $10 credit towards a different breakfast. I recommend you try the 'New Yorker' at least once. It's a toasted bagel with high-quality salmon and all the trimmings -- lettuce, tomato, capers, etc. (Can you tell I'm writing this before I have breakfast ) It's more filling that the mini muffins in the Continental breakfast.

- As QuantumLeap noted, the hotel restaurant, "Above", is a good place for dinner in it's own right. It's received good reviews in New York magazine and The New York Times.

BTW, the hotel is just across the street from the BB King Cafe. If you like Jazz music, this is a good place for an after dinner drink. They also serve dinner, but the food there is mediocre by NYC standards.

Stayed there in June. Loved it! Very close to where I had to go for meetings.

I tried checking this out on-line via various www.starwood.com links, but it looks like the on-line reservations system is down for the count as of Sunday morning. At least, that's my interpretation when I see the message "We're sorry, but a temporary error has occurred. Please try your request again." I guess that's one way of ensuring that there'll be no more rate anomalies.
