You do still get the wi-fi free at properties that charge if you log in using your HHonors Number, Room Number, and name when you are there on a third party booking.

I needed to use up some expiring Iberia Avios, so I decided it was worth using them to get a hotel room for "free", even though I'd lose out on all elite benefits. What a pleasant surprise when the front desk clerk told me she could add my loyalty number to the room pre-paid by Expedia, and get free breakfast! I also got a room in a better location (high floor facing away from the road, a few doors down from a 2nd room we'd booked through Hilton). This was at the Hilton Garden Inn Liberia Airport. So this policy is definitely property-dependent.
