We stayed there on an award stay and absolutely loved it. Beautiful place, gorgeous sunsets, lots to do. Pools are nice, but crowded. We liked the adults only pool the best as it was quiet and peaceful. A long walk to anywhere, but they do have trams and a boat! In some ways it is Disney like, but who cares, you are in Hawaii!!

Just got back yesterday, from an award stay. It's nice, sort of Disney like, as described by previous posts. I did have a very good time there. Did not get a room upgrade and had a garden-view room, but it was very adequate. The hotel was very booked for the holidays. As far as I can tell, the rooms in the Lagoon Tower, and the Palace Tower are better than the three-ring Ocean Tower. So for an award stay, I obviously got Ocean Tower, which is where the lounge is located.
Diamond benefits got me lounge access, for breakfasts and evening snacks. I did not do the mid-afternoon cookies and soft drinks, since I was never there. Not sure about Gold benefits though. Staffs are pleasant, but a little over worked. Breakfast selections are pretty good. The fresh fruits are simply wonderful. Evening hors d'oeuvres are a little on the deep-fried, greasy side. Make sure you get there early for breakfasts. It could be mob scene by 8 am. Imagine every diamond members comes in with 6 to 8 family members. That's what it feels like.
One last thing, there was an erroneous charge from the coffee shop billed to my room, that I had to dispute. I find it a little disturbing that someone can just order something and charge it to someone else's room. When I asked the front desk, there doesn't seem to be any safe guard. And I did not like the answer either, "We'll take it off for now, but after investigation, we might choose to put it back." Huh?
But hey, it's 80 degrees there. Nice, warm, sunny, breezy, and I did see many whales. So I realy can't complain...

WHALES in Hawaii, Dumb Me I thought this time of year All the Whales were in Vegas, guess they opened up some Casinos out there too.

We also just returned yesterday and I agree with just about everything. The lounge was crowded but seemed ebb and flow ok, we had a party of four and always found a table outside. My two boys played both the Beach and Kings courses and liked the Beach better (they are scratch, played tips). Likewise we were not upgraded because of capacity. When I was leaving I was behind a Diamond who was being a complete jerk because he was not upgraded. He was told to check back each day which seemed to piss him off more "you mean I have to come down here every day!" I guess I feel upgrades are a privilege not a right. We drove down the crater and tried to walk to the the lava flow, a long long way, well over three hours over a black lava bed; saw no one doing it. It was still fun all around the park, the upper rim was very crowded, tour buses, a lot fewer people down below. Best place to sunbath for us was at the end of the Ocean Tower, you can listen to the waves crashing and they have a few cabanas if you get there early people hog them, leave a book and seem to never come back, otherwise drag up a loung chair very nice actually saw some whale spouts.

I was there about 2 weeks ago... it's a fantastic place. I stayed in the Lagoon Tower, got an ocean view... went there on the gov't rate, $150 a night, they upgraded to ocean view... i'm a hh gold member, i asked about going to the kohala spa, it normally costs gold members $10, but the person at the concierge desk was friendly and gave me a key card (diamond members) to access everything free, plus the free breakfast, etc... it's a great place, enjoy... 80's everyday.

I totally agree with the hogging part. I mean, thow a book, a water bottle, or a towel there, and the cabana is yours for the rest of the day? Come on, there ought to be a rule, that if you don't show up with in a reasonable amount of time, then you lose it. The one I was next to was UNOCCUPIED for 5 hours. I thought those people were really rude and inconsiderate. We sat on the lounge chair, and the grass during the entire time.

We were at the HWV from Dec 17th to 23rd. Booked a pair of rooms using a pair of ALON2 awards (Ms. jmd001 and myself plus daughter and a friend).
In summary: We had a GREAT!!!! stay. Ms. jmd001 did NOT want to leave. One day of much wind, one-half day of semi-overcast; otherwise, gorgeous weather.
Other comments:
The 3 of us had been at HWV 10 years ago, so we basically knew what to expect. Yes, the place is "manufactured", "Disney-ese" ... but beautifully so, IMHO.
At checkin, we were told we had a pair of connecting rooms in the Ocean Tower with an ocean view. I asked "Any chance of a 2 BR suite for a Diamond?". The young lady went in the back and came back about 5 minutes later, giving us a 1 BR suite with a connecting second room (center tower of Ocean Tower overlooking the boat "canal"; Rooms 3096 and 3095, respectively). We loved it! A higher floor might have been better, but I thoroughly enjoyed the view as it was. The boats went right under Room 3095.
Had two EXCELLENT (but not cheap) dinners at the Kamuela Provision Company. The Ahi Wrap at the Orchid Cafe was very tasty!
No bad experiences at all during the stay.
On our last day, the fourth member of our party had an 11 PM flight from KOA (vice the 2 PM flight for the 3 of us). However, the hotel was very accommodating. If it had not be sold out for that (Friday) night, they would have let her keep the room. As it was, they made it easy to store her luggage, and provided a "changing room" to clean up and change before taking a taxi to the airport after the sun went down.
As a side note, the consensus highlight of being on the Big Island was to take the 15-mile ATV tour from ATV Outfitters. About $175 each for about 2 1/2 hours. (Bring/wear your swimming suit and a towel!)

The variety of opinions on the Hilton Waikoloa sure shows that so much depends on your point of view.
We returned yesterday from a one week stay at this resort. It had been 8 years since our last visit. We could not have enjoyed our stay more.This is my wife's favorite hotel in the world and as a Diamond, we travel alot.
The staff from the minute we checked in until we left made us feel like they really cared. When even the security and maintenace people smile and ask about your stay, you know they are trained well and enjoy their jobs. The grounds are as beautiful and clean as ever and every where you look you are amazed by the beauty and uniqueness.
As it was a holiday week and fully booked, we did not initially receive or expect an upgrade. 2 days later , we received a call from a manager informing us that they would be moving us to an ocean view room. It pays to be nice sometimes.
Our favorite dinners were at Kamuela provision company. Ask for David the server. Also say hello to Yoshi in the executive lounge. He will make your day.
The only sour employee we met in a week was the blond haired hostess at Kirin. She must have been having a bad day, so we walked away and had a wonderful experience at The Palm Terrace.
Two other suggestions- Book a trip with Waipio on Horseback. The wranglers were a blast and the Valley is a site to see. Skip Red Sail. We canceled our second trip after our first experience. Left late, returned early. Never sailed, just motored. Ads show 7-8 people on boat, we had over 40. Pu Pu's were uncut fruit and a bowl of snack mix with a bunch of little kids hands sifting through it.
Overall. one of the top Hiltons in the world. From my point of view!
