Additional drivers in the U.S. - Charges and Requirements !?
It seems there is still alot of confusion regarding additional drivers at Hertz. And the information on the website is everything but clear.
Now, I found several phrases regarding that topic on the Hertz Website. How do I read these ? Question How would I add an additional driver if I am a Gold Member? Answer If the person to be added on is your spouse, domestic partner or coworker, they are considered authorized operators and can operate the Hertz car without being added on. However, if they are not your spouse, domestic partner or coworker, you and the additional driver will need to go to any Hertz location to sign an Additional Authorized Operator (AAO) form to legally operate the Car. Question How would I add someone to my rental to drive if they are an AAA Member? Answer If you and the other person are both AAA members, your CDP or Club Code for AAA must appear on the rental. You will need to sign the additional driver form at a Hertz location but would not be any charge for this. Authorized Operators Acceptable Authorized Operators age 25 and older are automatically covered on the Rental Agreement. Authorized Operators are: - The employer, employee or fellow employee of renter on company business, (when booking includes company Corporate Discount Number). - The renter's spouse for rentals that originate in California, Iowa, New York or Nevada. - Authorized Operators do not have to be present at time of rental. - There are no fees for Authorized Operators. |

So all the above can drive the car without extra charge ? This seems to be more clear and can be found station specific : How is this clear???? Seems to not be clear at all... the statement Answer If the person to be added on is your spouse, domestic partner or coworker, they are considered authorized operators and can operate the Hertz car without being added on. Well thats the question... what applies here ?
The info the you pull up by station (as I would assume) or the general info at the Q&A section. For what do they even have this in the Q&A if it doesnt apply in general  |
It's clear in my mind.
What is the relationship of the other driver you're thinking of adding? One other thing to consider is that additional driver is only important if you get pulled over or are in an accident, for example. None of those have happened to me in many years of personal or rental car driving. |
Here is how I interpret the excerpts from above without looking at the actual Hertz site.
Spouses are authorized operators in all states if you are a gold member. They are only authorized for non gold members if the rental originates in one of those states listed, unless you fill out a form. Though I could be wrong... |
Authorized Operators (AO) are people who are automatically qualified to drive the vehicle. Authorized operators do not need to be present at the time of rent. Spouses are authorized operators for all #1 Club members (Non Gold & Gold). Certain company agreements extend authorized operators to co-workers who may be travelling with you.
Additional Authorized Operators (AAO) are people who need to present themselves to Hertz with you to add them on. Certain CDPs will waive AAO fees. For example, AAA members can add their spouse at no additional charge but their spouse still needs to be at the counter. -- Keep in mind that having someone be "authorized" on your rental does not extend your personal insurance to those people. It is usually in your best interest to purchase coverage if you are adding someone who is not on your policy. What usually happens is: -Your insurance company is going to tell you that they never authorized an additional driver. -The insurance company of the person you added is going to say that they are not paying because their insured is not responsible for the vehicle -- you are. |

Do we need to have the AAA code on the reservation in order not to get charged for her as an additional operator? The reason I ask is that the MR offer is slightly better. I'm finding the wording slightly ambiguous. |
AAA does need to be on your rental for the charges to be waived. However, if one of you would sign up for #1 Club then you can use whatever discount you would like and not have to worry about additional charges to add a spouse. Just go to hertz.com and join #1 Club -- just #1 Club and not Gold. You don't need to be #1 Club Gold for your spouse to automatically qualify. #1 Club is free to join.
