To narrow down your search, AAA's rate is $334 with no coupons. It would include additional drivers who are also AAA members. You might consider actually calling a travel agent and seeing if they can find a better deal.

Is the limited mileage of 100 miles per day typical for a convertible?

CDP 205418 and PC 988735 got the total down to about $291...not much savings, but this is going to be a pricey rental...the base rate w/no discounts is $106/day!!

crhptic Jun 13, 2006 1:52 pm

And if you mainly care about lowest rate, not necc. getting Hertz, you can get the same thing from Budget for $265 using BCD U072400

lawnboy246 Jun 13, 2006 2:22 pm

Do you know what discounts are associated with each of those codes?

Anyway of getting around the limited mileage cap?

The problem is that the Budet location in my area only rents the Sebring, while Hertz has the Mustang. I actually came across a coupon for Budget which on top of the $265 rate is good for one free weekend day which would bring it down to about $195.

You could try calling reservations and asking if they have any unlimited-mileage rates for that class of car on those dates. If so, then go about trying to find discount codes which apply to those rates... ;) If not, and the mileage limits are tied to the vehicle class/dates...hope you're not planning on driving a lot!

Meaning what, like percentages and dollar amounts, etc? In exact terms, no. I just know they make your total $291 because I tried it on Hertz.com :)

But is that true of all Budget locations? I suppose you could call the Dulles one and ask; the website says "Mustang or similar" which implies they do have some Mustangs somewhere in the system.

There's always variations in the car models, even in convertibles. It may say Mustang or similar for Hertz, and the Mustang may be most likely, but you still might get something else.

I rented a convertible from Dollar in MIA several years ago, Chrysler Sebring or similar. When I picked it up, the agent asked what color, nice touch. I said red, natch. :D And he said oh, I should warn you, the red one is an Eclipse. So I got what I thought was the cooler Mitsubishi Eclipse instead. Not sure how much those still show up in the rental fleets, particularly outside of Florida where convertibles are obviously plentiful and in significant demand year-round. But there still might be room for variances. Probably best to try to call and ask the station what they carry for the standard convertible. They might give you more than one car model (though guaranteeing one over another might be tough).

PS The IAD Hertz tends to get poor marks for service in discussions I've read here. This may be a reasonable time to look elsewhere....

Tried calling them yesterday and it seems to depend on location and vehicle class as to whether the mileage is unlimited or capped at 100 miles per day.

It is actually for a friend of mine birthday so it is all going to be local in town driving.

Didn't know if there was a coupon that was required with one of those codes that needed to be presented at the time of pickup.

Thanks for the suggestion! I have called Hertz at IAD and they seem to carry the Jaguar, Audi A4, Sebring, and Mustang convertibles, but they carry more of the Mustang than any of the other models. On the contrary, Budget, which I have rented from before, never had rented from Hertz, solely carries the Sebring, but mileage is unlimited.

Obviously in that list the Jag and the Audi are extra cost options, but I suspect the Mustang and Sebring are interchangeable, which would mean that you could get stuck with a Sebring anyway, but hopefully not. Some Hertz stations may have Toyota Solara or PT Cruiser convertibles, or Miatas, but these usually go out at different rates than the standard "Mustang or similar" convertible.

There is a $25 off a weekend rental coupon out there (see the last post or two of the big coupon thread), but I'm not sure if pickup on Thursday night will qualify. It might; I think that varies by location as well. Not sure if this would give a better quote than what you're already getting.

Okay, I plugged this in, PC 988735 $25 off weekend rental any car class, plus CDP from AAA (I used my local code, 215). Makes it cheaper than your original quote:

3 Weekend days at 81.89 USD

CDP Name: AAA EAST CENTRAL
Your rate has been discounted by 10 %

Additional Items (included in Approximate Total Charges)

Airport concession fee recovery 11.10 %
Vehicle license fee recovery 0.93 USD
Rate is guaranteed.
