Bizarre Pricing at OGG

Well, bizarre to me. I have a minivan reserved 13 nights in late Feb/early March $777.00. Need to add a 14th night. Didn't expect much change-except the price is going up $400.00. Repriced each day. Yes to nearly $1200.00. I priced the additional night alone and its $65.00. (BTW I checked the 13 days again just to see if some inventory reduction was causing the issue. No. Still $777.00) I called Hertz. "I'm seeing the same as you." I asked if it made sense-he said no but he couldn't fix anything manually. I could do two reservations, but I'd have to return to the airport the second day to start the 13 day rental. I understand that pricing is algorithm driven, but this one, I don't get at all.

Yes, pricing can be somewhat of a black box, but late Feb is a month or so away. Pricing can sometimes change multiple times a day. We recommend the following:
.
  • Track your original rental with AutoSlash for price drops
  • Make a new reservation fo the single day before your 13-day rental and track that one as well
  • Make a new reservation for the 14-day rental for the higher price and track that as well
Then, depending on what happens with each of those in the ensuing 4 weeks or so, you can make a decision about what to keep and what to cancel the day before you fly out. That's how we'd handle it if it was our own personal trip.

Which dates? to see what it was doing, I tried a dummy booking for a Minivan (Group R)
1st from 24/02/21 ro 09/03/21 gave
Base Rate

1 week at 308.87 USD
6 extra days at 44.17 USD per day = 265.02 USD

Taxes 27.33 USD
Fees $205.59

Total $806.81

then from 24/02/21 to 10/03/21
2 weeks at 308.87 USD = $617.74
Taxes $29.42
Fees $221.37

Total $868.53

( this is without any CDP applied )

Using the American Airlines CDP (217692) , 2 weeks came out as
2 weeks at 290.92 USD = $581.84
with taxes of $27.75 and fees of $217.38 for a total 2 week rental cost of $826.99

13 days came out slightly lower with a total cost of $768.18

Is it perhaps something to do with your CDP or account preferences when logged in? When I am logged in, I get $1299 including all taxes/fees/LIS/LDW for 2 weeks using the same CDP due to account preferences

Feb 25-March 11 are the 14 days that price $1176

Sep. Feb 25-26 is $70 and 26-March 11 is $777.00. That's what's making my head spin.

In fact Feb 24-Mar 11 is less than Feb 25-Mar 11.

I will play around with some of the things yuo did.

Is there any holiday or something around 25 Feb. Just trying again and 24/02 - 10/03 is still as above, but 25/02 - 11/03 is coming out high cost
deferring until 26th and it is cheap again
Looks like something odd about the 25th

Not that I know of! I have 2/24-3/11 reserved now. I am calling tomorrow to shave off the day. Long shot, but I am going to press that it not reprice the weekly rates.

If you take off the day, I expect that it will be repriced. ; if you are happy to return after 1 day and redo rental that will work, but I doubt that reservations will ignore the rates

Agree. I will give it a shot and use the two reservations if needed.

Pricing today for the two weeks is $1600.00. I ended up booking two consec one week rentals. Total $775.00. I will never figure it out, but I'm ok with this. Far cheaper than any option I've seen with anyone.

Be sure to track your new reservations as prices certainly could drop in the coming weeks.

If you earn Skymiles you get double Just schedule a Costco run and swap contracts that day - easy! Oh and OGG is bizarre. I booked for 2 weeks and a Land Rover was $20 more than a midsize for the 2 weeks!

Wouldn't it be cheaper to rent for 13 days, then return a day late, than to rent for 14 days?

Could OP point out, when at the desk for the original reservation, that he'll return 13 days later for Reservation #2 for the same vehicle type, and ask if they have the ability to add the 14th night then & there? Or does that throw a wrench in their system?

I have done a lot of weekly rentals so I will throw in my 2 cents. If you ask at the desk to add the 14th day, it will likely reprice the whole rental. The best bet would be to just pick up the original reservation and attempt to extend it a day. You can do it online and it will show you the amount for the 14th day.
