Thrifty/Dollar Visa Hold??
 

Hi,

I rent with Hertz almost exclusively, and I know that the Visa card on my profile does not get hit with a $200 hold on top of the rates. Since Hertz owns both Dollar and Thrifty, do others who have rented with them know if this rule also applies?

It’s probably because you are a Hertz Gold member. You’ll likely see a pre-authorization taken for the rental amount plus $150-$200 with Dollar/Thrifty.

I also signed up with Dollar Express and Thrifty Blue Chip accounts with the same visa card. My question is since I belong to their respective loyalty rental program like Hertz, and they are owned by Hertz, will the same rule applies?

We've honestly never had the opportunity to check whether an Express/Blue Chip member would have the pre-auth or not. Is your concern that you are so close to your credit limit that the $200 hold might restrict your spending ability? Note that Alamo typically does not take a hold so if you are that close to your credit limit, you may want to rent with them.

As a Blue Chip member I've generally only been pre-auth'd for the quoted rental amount.

I have a bunch of rentals coming up, and I want to designate this Visa as a car rental card. If there are no additional holds, I will leave this card. Otherwise, I will put use my mastercard instead, which always has an additional $200 with Hertz and Dollar and Thrifty.

You can always charge it to a different card on return so why not just preauth it on the card which has insurance coverage, and pay with your preferred card at the end of rental assuming you don’t damage it?
