Hertz vs. Europcar in France
 

I've made a few reservations but noticed that Europcar was quite a bit cheaper, around 120 euros or so. Picking up in Lyon at train station and then dropping at MRS. My main go to in US is Hertz but since points have become even more useless with them and I can't get United miles for this booking I can't think of a reason to not go with Europcar. Maybe coverage, primary, with my cc would be more seemless to deal with if needed since Europcar is presumably a european company? Any other concerns with them vs. Hertz? I've used them, 20 years ago, so really can recall the experience....

In our experience, the complaint rate with Europcar is far higher than with Hertz. They are much more likely to play the "damage scam" game than Hertz and the other international brands are. We agree that 120 EUR is a big difference, so we probably wouldn't necessarily recommend throwing that money out the window, but we would go over the rental contract very carefully for extra/erroneous charges, and fully document the condition of the vehicle with photos and/or video at the time of rental so they can't try to pin some existing damage on you.
