Liability insurance through 3rd party, no auto insurance, need LSI?

(Sorry if this isn't as detailed as it should be, I spent a long time composing a detailed post, but stupid PHPBB times you out and when you hit submit you lose everything )

I read the threads on this issue, but they are old, often confusing and sometime contradictory.
  • Using Amex Plat to purchase with Premium Car Rental Protection
  • Renting in AZ for 4 days
  • Have no personal auto insurance (live in NYC)
  • Will probably rent from Hertz (might splurge for Luxury)

It looks like I'm not covered for Liability or uninsured motorist with Amex, and my mandated state coverage is a paltry 15/30/10 (what car costs 10K?).

Questions:
* So if I want to be covered above 15/30/10 (I do), I need to purchase Hertz' LIS (which also covers uninsured motorist), but nothing else because Amex Premium Car Rental Protection covers everything else, correct?
* I hear you can purchase liability through a 3rd party. I went to https://www.insuremyrentalcar.com
But they wont sell me any insurance since I'm in NY. Any other options?

Thanks for your help!

Approximately how many days a year do you rent a car anywhere in the U.S. or Canada? If it's at least 15-20 times a year, then you might look into the cost of a non-owned-auto liability-insurance policy. (Mine is through Travelers Insurance.) Non-owned-auto policies issued in New York State automatically include rental car loss/damage coverage, up to the policy's property-damage limit.

Does any of your credit cards (including your Amex card) include any free rental-car coverage? If so, you probably don't need the Amex Premium coverage unless you plan to rent a car that the free coverage won't cover, either because of cost or type of vehicle .

If you need liability coverage, then you need to purchase it from Hertz as LIS. A non-owner policy would be the only other option. I don't believe that Insuremyrentalcar sells liability insurance.

Does the OP have an umbrella liability policy? If so, check whether this would adequately cover liability on rental cars.

Thanks for the quick replies.

I forgot to mention it. I did look into non-owner policies a while back. I can't remember the cost, but I remember it being cost prohibitive. I really only (currently) rent a car once or maybe twice a year. I live in NYC, take subways, travel for work every week but use lyft for wherever I want to go (usually easier than rentals). I do not have any umbrella policy or any other type of coverage.
