Extra Day Rate Charge
 

I picked up a car in Manhattan (standard full size) and while the daily rate was correct at under a hundred dollars per day, the contract showed that charges for an extra day would be $507.36 per extra day.

I asked the agent how there could be such a ridiculous rate and she said they had no control, it was determined by the Hertz computer system, and there was nothing she could do.

I guess Hertz has the right to set any rates it wants, but the extra day charge is not shown when the reservation is made. Is there any way to determine the extra day charge in advance?
If I had known I would have chosen a different company and not taken the risk of being hit for $507 if I was a 1/2 hour late.

How much is the additional hour rate? If you return the car just 30 minutes late, you should only be charged for an extra hour, not an extra day.

How much would another company have charged for an extra day on your particular rental? Unless and until you know that, it might be a little premature to write off Hertz. And, unless you had a prepaid rental, you had the right not to accept the rental conditions when Hertz gave you the contact to sign at pick-up.
