Hertz Germany Insurance Advice needed
 

I am renting for the first time in Germany Saturday using a Hertz Europe Special CDP without insurance as best I can tell. I am using my AMEX gold so I will have their LDW but my USAA insurance provides no coverage in Germany.

What do most people do? Should I buy some hertz insurance and, if so, which one?

And confirm the mentioned CDP is valid or you may have other issues after the rental.

If you have coverage through a credit card (Amex, Citi AAdv Plat, etc) you may also request a statement of coverage and a copy of the details of that policy for your trip. In my case Citi Plat was happy to provide these. While I was not asked, it has been noted that some rental agencies in the EU will require a copy at the time of pickup if declining their coverage.

I've been researching this issue lately. OP mentions Amex insurance, and it's pretty clear (from various FT threads in Amex forum) that the free CDW offered by the card will not be honored if you file a claim and are using any free day or discount coupons (not sure about CDP only, however).

Amex Premium protection seems to be OK with free days, but I have an email into Amex right now to confirm. I am using Hertz points for my upcoming Germany rental and am only charging taxes and fees to the Amex and want to be sure the Premium Protection would still be valid in this case.

As far as liability insurance (to other people and property) I'm pretty sure this is included in your rental rate by law in Germany (I think it's an EU thing).
