Speed Limiter on the Camaro?

Just looking at a few rental Camaro video's on the tube and one vid came up with a rented Camaro being speed limited at 112mph? Which just made me wonder if they are.. is this common practice with powerful rentals?

It would make sense i guess as it would prevent someone with limited skill having a very high speed accident.

That would be odd, as recently I hit 120 in a freaken Nissan Altima Hybrid to pass this jerk off who thought I was too slow to catch up to his 1990 toyota tercell. I hate speeders win weak cars.

It depends on the year of the car, but if they don't add anything else to it, the top speed would be in the 150 to 170 range.

There is a thread in the National forum (believe it's the National one) where some people have gotten Fords with the so called Nanny Key, meant for teens where the top speed is limited to 70, the radio can only go to a certain volume, etc. They give you the teenagers key, keep the administrative ksy so you can't reset it.

Acme, a local rental agency in New Haven, was all over the press a few years ago when it started sending out bills to it's renters who they tracked through GPS for speeding, hitting them with $150 fees for each time they were over 79 mph. He had $450 in fines (which he agreed to when he signed the rental contract). They were just processing the fees as their system saw them, when he turned the car back in he was already hit with them. He took them to court, not sure how it all ended.

V6 Camaros are definitely limited to 118mph. Not sure about whether the V8 Camaros are limited and if so, to what.

Yes it would be a shame if it is i mean we are all grown ups at the end of the day! 118mph for the V6? that is just a bit silly! My 1200cc 4cyl nissan hits 115mph.

Your 1200cc Nissan suggests you're not an American driving a U.S.-spec Nissan, as we regard 1200cc engines as appropriate for (smallish) motorcycles or ride-on lawnmowers.

Lots of vehicles in the U.S. are sold with speed governors (rentals or not) that prevent vehicles from attaining an aerodynamics-limited top speed. Some times that limit can be pretty high; for some light trucks and SUVs it can be lower than 160 kph. Given that posted speed limits are no higher than 80 mph (~130 kph) on any public road in the U.S., that seems sufficient.

Indeed i'm not an american native. I just dont get the limiter thing because here in europe unless its a truck or company vehicle we dont really have a speed limiter as such. I mean yes we have 155mph limits on some cars but generally we dont have the decision made for us regarding how fast the nanny allows us to go or what max mph our speedometer should read. If we break the law by exceeding the speed limit its a decision we make and one we pay for. Yep 1200cc 4cyl cars are unheard of over there for now but with the 1600cc ford fiesta becoming available in the US it looks like america is changing. Also i have driven all over the US and it seems nobody sticks to the speed limits! Maybe thats why limiters are needed!

Georgia is not fun to go speeding in. I have to be very careful crossing in from Florida, and around Atlanta it is just bad news to go too fast. I got pulled over doing 95 just inside the GA border once, my English licence and innocent face got me out of a ticket. That or I got lucky

Had an experience like that a few years ago in North Carolina. I was doing 95 on the way to Topsail (and my wedding!) and got pulled over. Cop was pretty serious about hitting me with a ticket when this corvette with NC plates blew past us so close that the cop ended up halfway through my window.

The cop threw my license at me, wished me a nice day, shouted 'Slow it down', and then zipped off after the vette.

Funny thing is, my wife-to-be, daughter, and myself stopped at a diner some miles down the road when I saw the vette. Inside, there was a middle-aged blond who was cussing up a storm about getting nailed and how she was SURE that it was a setup!

i can confirm the v6 tops out at 123mph , confirmed by gps

obviously was a privately owned car on a race track, id not treat a rental in such a way;)

from my experiences america vehicles are more likely to have a limiter then others.. especially GM...i'm sure the camaro limited to 112 was a base V6 b/c the speed is the limit for S rated tires...its cheaper for to limit speed and place cheaper tires..euro and asian brands are more likely to run H rated tires on a model line across the board

ex..chevy camaro base v6 s-rated tire top speed 112
upgrade to RS model or a sport package..you'll get a different tire package and speed goes up

hyundai gen coupe it could be the base v6 or top of the line..they all run Z rated tires good for 150 mph

I can confirm the speed rating of the tires has a lot to do with the speed limiter. The 2002 Camaro Z28 for example had a speed limiter unless you ordered the optional Z-rated Eagle RS-A tires from the factory in which case there was no speed limiter.

The V6 Camaro's are probably less likely to have Z rated tires compared to the SS.

Ummm...I heard the Corvette shuts down at 110...;)

astan100 Jul 18, 2011 10:31 pm

The V6 camaro is limited because it has terrible tires, so I think chevy wanted to avoid lawsuits and threw the limiter in there. That's my guess, but yes, it's limited.

The SS V8 is not limited (confirmed by me as well)

The ZHZ Corvette is also 100% not limited (confirmed by me and LOTS of youtube videos)

:D I was not so lucky. I was 'arrested' in GA for speeding. As an Englishman, the HWP didn't think I'd likely show for my court date...so I was escorted to the local jail, where I was technically arrested but was free to go after paying the fine!

Was all very friendly and I framed the paper work as a badge of honour! Ahh, the good old days!
