Amen on Oki

Hole in the wall it is the food is really good. The woman who runs it is sweet as can be, but one of its traditions is servers so cranky they are entertaining. One of their breakfasts or lunches will fill you up for way less than $22 or $36. You just have to put up with being told where to sit and a cranky old woman telling you what you should order.

Hilton Buffet

We wanted a Sunday brunch over there two days ago. We called about the marriott's brunch but they didn't have a reservation early enough for us. At that point I guess we decided we weren't up for spending the money on a nice brunch.

The ResortQuest Makaiwa(formerly Courtyard Kauai) does indeed have a buffet, but I'm sure it's not anything like what it was before. We were staying there so we considered it, got a table, perused the buffet, and were unimpressed with the choices. Nothing unique. There was an omelette station and waffle maker. $17.95. We decided not to eat there. We called about the marriott's brunch but they didn't have a reservation early enough for us. Then we set off to find the hilton. Checked out the grounds, walked through the buffet. Not alot of offerings but what was there looked like decent quality, and by this time we were getting quite hungry. No omelette station or waffle maker but they did have french toast. We figured it would be between the RQ price and the Marriott price. Nope, $17.95, same as RQ. I guess the lack of omelette station is the reason.

What they did have: Usual fresh fruit, cereal, biscuits & gravy(perfect biscuits and unique sausage(perhaps beef) gravy), crispy bacon, sausage, great seasoned potatoes, white rice, scrambled eggs, mexican omelette, french toast. Assorted pastries, bread for toasting, bread pudding. We felt it was a fair price for an average buffet. Certainly not best buffet (and not a brunch) but I thought it might be worth mentioning for someone looking for something a bit cheaper.

What is with the aggro birds and Kauai buffets? I've seen this at the sheraton, hilton, resortquest. I hate it. I don't want to share a table with avian friends. I don't want to see them buzzing the buffet, possibly dropping you know what in the food. The 'open-air' ambiance is not worth the cost. If you want to feed the birds, please don't do it on your table or in the restaurant. Ugh.
